1st Birthday in my backyard...Not just burgers and hot dogs. Help!
probably going to do DS's 1st bday in my back yard at the end of June.
although i will probably put the grill on and do some hamburgers and hot dogs, i wanted to have some other food variety.
was thinking sausage and peppers, pulled pork sandwiches. maybe hero?
is baked ziti too heavy for a summer party? any other ideas for main dish and sides/appetizers?

Some cold salads like pasta salad, cole slaw, and/or green salad. Maybe grilled veggies too but that may be a lot of work. Boil up a bunch of corn on the cob kids love that!

I think baked ziti is fine. Shish-kebabs are good, too!
ETA: I'd have some fruit salad, cheese and crackers, and maybe something like spinach/artichoke dip for apps. Since it's June, I don't think I'd even bother with hot apps.

Jackie when my cousins had their babies 1st birthday party in the back yard they had pretty much what you listed, heros, burgers, dogs, ziti, salads, and some spanish food items.
Then for apps they just put out chips and dips. HTH

You could always grill up some meats and veggies and have peppers and onions on the side and do a "Fajita bar"

I served these amazing chicken spinach feta burgers at one of our last summer BBQs that were a great hit.
A variety of grilled sausage --- brocolli rabe, sweet no fennel, parmasean and parsley, chicken sausage...
Chicken tenders marinated in your favorite BBQ sauce...
Pulled pork that you can make in the crockpot --- super easy, and serve with mini buns and extra sauce on the side for people to add in...
All kinds of grilled veggies...
As far as salads...
I love cutting up every kind of veggie imaginable, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, celery, carrots, etc, cubing a block of mozz cheese, some pepperoni and adding a bottle of italian dressing...let it marinate overnight, delish!

I've given this recipe out to so many people. I love it!!
Taco Salad
1 lb beef 1 head of lettuce 1 container of cherry/grape tomatoes 1 bag of cheese doritos 1 bottle of French dressing 1 bottle of Catalina dressing 1 package of Taco cheese
Brown the meat Cut up lettuce and tomatoes Crunch up the doritos into smaller pieces
Mix everything BUT the dressings together.
Just before serving add the dressings (it will get too soggy if you put it in the salad to early).
Enjoy. I guarantee it will be a huge it!

I always like to serve pasta with broccoli, garlic, oil and grated cheese in the summer. It tastes great hot, cold and room temp!
Love doing the pulled pork or chicken in the crockpot with mini buns
Semi homemade baked beans
Corn on the cob with herb butter

I make a roasted veg salad thats super easy, I just chop up Eggplants, Zucchinis, Onions and lots of garlic. Roast that with oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper, pop it in the oven for like 20 minutes. When it comes out of the oven I drain a tin of chick peas and mix that in. Its always a huge hit!

Re: 1st Birthday in my backyard...Not just burgers and hot dogs. Help!
I find that doing hot dogs and hanburgers is really time consuming for a big party and the person on the grill doesn't get to enjoy the party. I normally do a hero, some salads, baked ziti, sausage and peppers, maybe a chicken dish.
I make a nice pasta salad with the suddenly salad mix and then jazz it up with canned mushrooms, chunks of mozzerella, red peppers from a jar, olives and artichoke hearts. I also would do mac and potatoe salad and a green salad.
