Can Anyone Give Me a Really GREAT Math Lesson To Do For a Kindergarten Observation Lesson?

I'm recently teaching in new city school that I LOVE after having been excessed. In my old school we always opted for option a, not a formal observation but the new school I am in seems to only do formal observations. In any event, as experienced as I am in Kindergarten, Math was never my forteChat Icon

Ps. I assume I should do it on a topic we are up to on our curriculum calendar that week, not something unrelated, correct? If that be the case we are on whole and part and also symmetry. Thanks!

I think that simplicity is best for observations. I think for symmetry you could make a giant t-chart on the board and have a variety of paper shapes made (some symmetrical and some not) You can label the columns and then show students how you would determine if the shape was symmetrical (fold it in half) and then put it in the right column. (mini-lesson) Then have students come up to the board to put a few in the right columns. (guided practice)


(independent practice) Then I would hand out a t-chart paper to the kids and have them label it. I would have printed words for the kids who do not write yet to glue down (differentiation). Then give each child (or pair) a plastic baggie with various shapes inside of it. I would make two sets though (one that is very easy to tell the symmetrical ones from the non and one where the difference is less) and give the former to your lower students and the later to the higher. Then have the students glue them in the right column. I would also make a separate worksheet where early finishers can look around the room to find 5 symmetrical items for early finishers.

This is pure, simple workshop model and my administrator always compliments my lessons. Hope this helps!

Oh and yes, I would make sure that the lesson coincides with the curriculum. My principal also wants us to include what we did in previous lessons and what we will be doing afterward.

I teach special ed. 1st and 2nd grade and I have done this with my kids. They are 8:1:1 kids with autism, so they need less prompting to get through it, but you could totally do it with some hand-over-hand for some of them.
