feeding therapy

Is not covered through CPSE...

Is it covered through insurance for anyone?

Is it expensive?

We are getting worse. Noahs down to about 4 foods he will eat. Actually, he will eat his favorite candy and potato chips if allowed.

Otherwise its those 4 foods...dinosaur chicken nuggets from target, Eggo Cinnamon waffles, Yoplait m & m yogurt, and 'sometimes' a half of a plain bagel.

I can also sometimes get him to eat an apple. And for snack at school he will eat goldfish or the gerber graduates fruit strips.

this cannot be healthy. It just cant.

I go through the bags of chicken nuggets like water. sometimes he has them 3 times a day and thats it.

Re: feeding therapy

DS is 26 months old and has severe feeding issues caused by a sensory processing disorder.. He eats yogurt, pancakes, jello, and pureed fruits pouches. He will eat on occasion Arrow Root cookies, crackers, and cookies. He would eat chocolate dipped whatever all day long if I let him.. He gets Speech and OT through the county. But when I called to have him re-evaluated for feeding therapy they said I had to wait. The speech therapist and Occupational therapist is suppose to be working with him on that. But the speech therapist is doing really good with his speech she doesn't want to turn him off with eating. The OT in fairly new so we are trying to work out what he needs still... Nassau County has cracked down on their services... I was also worried about his health, but as long as he is gaining weight and drinking milk or eating yogurt, everyone says he is fine..

it is a shame they are having to cut back services Chat Icon

DS received nutritional services through EI, it helped us SO much, the school district would give us nothing. My son has lost weight since. Thats why the regular Ped and school social worker finally told us we needed to see the Developmental Ped about it. Thing is, she says like you the SPD is what is causing it, but I hear feeding therapy is direct pay and a lot of money ( that we dont have)...

Good luck to you!

Re: feeding therapy

Just generally, my son eats NOTHING & hasn't for 6 months (He lives on Pediasure.). We did NOT get approved through CPSE for feeding.

It is just so sad to me that no one considers a life function that is necessary to survival important enough to be covered.

We do receive limited therapy through insurance but it is a constant fight. We had to submit a letter of medical necessity from his ped. & then after the limited number of visits ran out, we had to submit a progress report from his therapist & another letter from his ped.

When we received coverage both his union & the feeding provider said we were the first people they heard of that received services (and they were happy). Apparently this is a new service being covered in extreme cases, although it is difficult to receive.

Donna, I'll be sending FM.

I know that St. Charles offers feeding therapy, and does take insurance for it, for those that live near there.

Re: feeding therapy

Why aren't your OT's and Speech therapists working on Feeding? I used to work (OT) at Just Kids preschool and my sister still does (Speech) We always addressed feeding. Even the classroom staff worked on it. Most of the feeding kids had limited food repertoires.. A child surviving on pedisure (other then a physical need for a liquid diet) should definitely go to a program like St. mary's. Thats just crazy that between EI/CPSE and Insurance it can't be covered.

because it is not in my son's IEP. And so why work on it. the O/T can't b/c she has limited time with him and his fine motor delays are significant enough that she needs that time to meet his goals.

The classroom is too large for my son IMO...18 kids and theres no way they have time at snack time etc to assist.

I actually just found out he was being rewarded with candy there for tasks and meanwhile at home we are limiting the artifical dyes and sugar. I didnt think to tell them as I didnt think it would be given without permission.

Donna,

You wrote out a menu similar to Bryan's!
It drives me nuts.

At school, his ABA teachers work with him and our family trainer does as well.

Bry's Menu goes like this: "If mommy would allow me to eat grilled cheese for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I'd have it MADE".

In all seriousness, it goes:

Breakfast: Rice Krispies, Any type of Cheerios, Waffles (the Eggo Cinnamon ones), Pancakes.

Snack: Goldfish Crackers, Cheese Itz, Mandarin Oranges, Applesauce, Banana and he JUST started eating peaches. Now, this is all the Dole 100% in water/juice fruit. Not, fresh (besides banana).

He also just started eating Hershey's chocolate kisses or miniatures (should I be proud, probably not, but, he's not a cake, munckin, brownie kid)..**only cookies** LOL

Lunch: Yogurt: Dora or Trix and a slice of cheese

Dinner: Chicken Nuggets, Fries, Grilled Cheese and a fruit.

Drives me nuts! Dinner is a nightmare. He hates pizza. Hates pasta. Won't even try a burger.

We are slowly doing the BLT again (Bite, Lick Taste) and I have to make sure I do it more and more.

Can they work with Noah at school?

ETA: Sorry, just read about the "at school" help.

This is exactly my DD down to every last word. I was never approved for feeding either because they said she was eating just didn't have a variety Chat Icon .

I will say that in her preschool they had a Food Fun Friday and they had the kids do the BLT with all different foods and she did like it. They also do it in kindergarten with the Life Skills room. Out of the blue she'll ask me for something new that I know they tried in school. Last week she asked for bacon and I think I bought about 100 lbs of it lol.

I think that making trying the food fun and a game may at least get them to try something new.

It is really hard to get services once they hit the time that the school district takes over.. A friend of mine had to fight so hard for her kids to get it, but they did.. They figure a lot of people won't fight the fight.. I am hoping that my son will get approved when he is re-evaluated in late Feb.. He only gained 4 oz from 21 months to 2 years.. I don't think that is healthy..
I don't have the money for outside help. There was a period of time I though he was going to end up on a feeding tube. He can't have pediasure due to a soy protein allergy.Chat Icon

I don't understand the system at all. My son gets Speech and OT 2 times a week, 45 minutes each session. It isn't long enough in my therapists opinions.. He definitely needs feeding therapy.. Our OT is working on desensitizing his hands but it is going so slow.. Where do you live? We are in Nassau County.. I hope you can get the help he needs.. It is a real problem that needs to be taken care of. Not just a picky eater!!!

We are in Suffolk..in Lindenhurst.

DS was always picky. He stopped "eating" most foods around 11-15 months , he had only really started them then...

He will get 'stuck' on foods and it is very hard for us to get him to eat anything other then that.

I was never worried till the weight loss came. Then no one still wanted to do much about it. He has recently gained a small bit of it back but he is still not in the normal range for weight for his age.

It is just so hard to get help for certain issues without paying out of pocket.

Wow! Not bad. He does eat a few different things.

My DD is 7 now and although she eats a few more things than she has in the past, it is still pathetic.

What most people don't understand is the stress that comes along with having a child that doesn't eat. Not only does my DD still not eat many things, she suffers from migraines and then vomits. They are triggered by not eating. Now tell me how this does not affect her ability to learn in school. She got sent home from school numerous times for this.

My DD drank milk, ate yogurt and string cheese for almost a year straight- nothing else! I tired to get feeding therapy for years. She did get speech in pre-k, and they got her to taste green apple and jello- nothing beyond that.

I really hope things change and insurance starts to cover feeding therapy for everyone's sake.

All of a child's goals aren't listed on the IEP. The IEP is the minimum that needs to be addressed. If every service provider added every single goal and objective, the IEP would be huge. Plus children change so much throughout the year. If feeding/sensoryprocessing is an area of weakness it should be addressed in therapy. Its frustrating that there isnt more support for feeding. I assume the insurance co only covers failure to thrive cases. The classroom teacher should have notified parents prior to using candy as a reward.

Amen to this. No one seems to realize the stress/anxiety it causes a parent. I cannot believe in your DD's case they don't see that as a legit reason for services. Ridiculous.

As I mentioned BC/BS is just starting to accept feeding therapy as a service. They are/were dealing w/ St. Mary's in Bayside (had a number of meetings w/ them showing them what their feeding covers & showing them numbers on how many children it affects, etc.) Hopefully more insurance co's will jump on board.

In my son's case he IS gaining weight, but ONLY b/c he's drinking Pediasure 24/7; if he one day wakes up & decides to stop; he'll be on a feeding tube.

It amazes me too that insurance won't cover Pediasure in our case as it is the only thing sustaining my DS; it's not a supplement.
