What am I in for at DS's IFSP meeting?

DS has been getting OT and ST since Sept 2011. He has a SPD, speech delay, and major feeding issues.. His therapists and myself have been fighting to get him feeding therapy. What goes on at the IFSP meeting? He is 27 months old.. His ST is going to see if she can get an extra day so she can work on his feeding needs..

Hi, I'm an OT. Looks like you're having your 6th month IFSP meeting if your DS started with EI in Sept 2011. During an IFSP meeting, your child's current level of functioning will be discussed. The 6th month progress reports that your therapists have submitted will be reviewed by the EIOD, and you will also get to provide your own input as to your child's strengths and weaknesses in the different areas of concern (e.g. speech, feeding, motor, etc.). Based on the reports, noted delays and your input, the EIOD will decide whether to continue with the current mandate, lessen the frequency, or increase the frequency, or approve any additional evaluation/s as appropriate. If your ST was hoping to get an increase in services (e.g. from 2x30 mins./wk to 3x30 mins./wk), a justification letter should be presented to support its need. ST will discuss feeding issues in the justification letter, include perhaps a formal or informal assessment, and why the recommendation for increase is warranted. You should also be prepared to advocate hard for your child to get that increase, and perhaps prepare info like at what percentile is your child now in terms of weight, what is your pediatrician's take on his feeding issues, how limited is your child's diet, how has your child's feeding issues affect family dynamics on an everyday basis, etc. Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for the information.. This is still new to me!!! We have all been fighting to get him a feeding therapist but our coordinator doesn't think it is necessary.. He is underweight for his age and he only eats pancakes, yogurt, pureed fruit, some fresh fruit (soft), and crunchy foods. It has been like that since he was 13 months old.. Our therapists are great and work with each other nicely. I have been keeping all of his progress in a notebook. He is progressing in speech but it is slow and feeding may actually be worse now... Thank you for all the information. I don't want to go into this not knowing anything....

All I can suggest is whatever your requesting stand strong and don't back down. My experiences have always been fighting and me having to prove what my boys need. In the end though it's what we have to do because no one else will. GL!
