Re: waiting for the parent phone call - advice?
IMO you did nothing wrong; if he'd made the comment to you and no one else heard it, and you brought it to everyone's attention., you'd be in the wrong. But he brought attention on himself. If he was so concerned about being singled out he should have kept his mouth shut. Also, you would have lost face if you didn't deal with the consequence then and there. The rest of the kids would have thought, "hey, he got away with it, I'll try it too."
He's trying to make you feel guilty for disciplining him, it seems. Like all of a sudden he cares about not wanting to look bad.
If you hear from the mom, that's what I would say to her.

Thank you, you made me feel better. I didn't think much about it until another teacher told me they have had phone calls from the parent about similar situations.

If he didn't make the comment infront of the class, you wouldn't have had to say what you did infront of the class.
Would you tell your mom/dad that the teacher yelled at you if you did something wrong? I wouldn't. I'd be happy the teacher didn't call my mom/dad.

Sorry but I truly believe in the concept of "praise in public, discipline in private". If the parent does call, I would admit that in retrospect I would have handled hesitation differently.

Re: waiting for the parent phone call - advice?
eh... technically that could be viewed as corporal punishment if you purposely singled him out in front of the class and caused him severe embarassment/shame/etc. depends how strict your district and principal are with that. you could potentially be hearing from the parent. BUT we've all been there and it's not the end of the world. id apologize and say in the future your disciplining their son will take place in private. no biggie. good luck!
