potty training question regarding night time
As I was searching LIF about potty training I noticed a few posts that suggested the following... Wake DC up an hour after they fall asleep, or sometime in middle of night to pee, and then back to bed. This may help to wake up dry in morning, and to let them know it is ok to wake up to use potty and then back to bed.
Is this a good idea?
We are on Day 3 of three day potty training. Morning after day 1 she woke at 430 to pee, didn't fall back asleep until 530 and was up at her normal 7:00 dry. Morning after day 2 she was calling for me at 7:00 I ran in and she was wet. But apparently I didn't hear her the first two times and I guess she peed in crib because I was to late. my fault. I will see what happens tomorrow morning. But I'm curious to know if this was a good idea or not. Thanks

Re: potty training question regarding night time
to be honest with you, I am not even going to attempt night training until DD is fully daytime trained. She hasnt had an accident for a couple of weeks but still soaks the pullup every night and I have read that nighttime dryness is developmental and most kids are not ready for it right away. I'm not stressing it right now, she gets a pullup every night and still does great during the day. but if you want to try it, i thinkt he idea of waking up before you go to bed and limiting drinks a couple hours before bed might work.

Thanks for responding. I stop all liquids at least two hours before bed. She pees on the potty a few times before bed and it's the very last thing we do before lights out. Before starting to train she would be dry in the mornings sometimes. But it was also hard to tell other times bc she would just hang out a little in her crib before we would get her. So she may have been dry but I don't know for sure. I guess we will see what happens tomorrow morning. Thanks.

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I don't know if it's right or not, but I don't think I'm going to do that with DS. He is potty-trained during the day and can now wake up dry after his nap consistently. I didn't do anything to encourage that, he just started holding it on his own. After a couple of weeks, I stopped putting a pullup on him for nap time and he was fine. I'm hoping for the same thing at night. A few times already he has woken up dry. Not sure if this is right or not but it's what I'm doing!

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I just stumbled on this post since we are potty training. DS is 2 yrs 8 mo and has taken well to daytime potty training. Now I need to figure out nighttime. The prob is the wetness isnt waking him up during the night. What can I do to help him not wet the bed at night?
To the OP, have you been successful? Since this post was from last month. Thanks

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I would not try nighttime potty training until the child is trained during the day.

Re: potty training question regarding night time
As previous poster stated. Getting through the night is a developmental thing. There is a hormone in the brain that kids develop at different times that is responsible for allowing them to wake themselves to go to the bathroom at night. If they are not producing it, they will not wake. I had this problem with my DD and it wasn;t until she was 4 that she was able to do it. My pediatrician said they don;t worry about it until they are 6 or 7. If they still can;t do it he mentioned something about hormone replacements. Thank god we did not have to go through that. I would say not to stress right now. The fact that you have him/her day trained is amazing at that age!! Good luck!

Re: potty training question regarding night time
My DD is fully trained during the day but at night I still use the pull-ups. I don't wake her up to use the bathroom. She goes right before bed and that's it. I also limit her fluid intake the hour or so leading into bed.
There is just NO way I would wake her up and disturb her sleep during the night, I wouldn't want to deal with the headache of her not wanting to get back into bed and fall back asleep.
I've read that staying dry through the night actually has more to do with them physically maturing over training them. A few books have said it just takes time for their bladders to mature enough to be able to hold their pee through the night. Who knows if that's 100% true or not but I did read it in a few places.
I've just been keeping tracking of my DD's pull-ups in the morning and after naps. She never poops at night (and hasn't in months) but initially when we potty trained her she was waking up with drenched pull-ups both in the morning and after naps. Now, a little over a month into being trained, more often than not she wakes up totally dry from naps and most mornings she's either totally dry or just slightly wet in her pull-up. I figure that once she wakes up completely dry for a few weeks in a row she will be ready to just wear her panties to bed as opposed to the pull-ups.
Most friends and family of mine have done it the same way. I can't think of anyone I know that has done the waking up thing. For me, there is NO way I will mess with a sleeping kid!!!

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I never woke them ...They just wore a diaper for a couple of months at night until they kept waking up consistently dry. I can count on one hand the amount of times they have woken up in the middle of the night to pee....usually they just do it when they wake up for the day! I wouldn't want them to form a habit of waking up if they dont have to KWIM!?!?!

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I agree from my experience that when my DD was fully day trained- she lost the pull up at night. We always did undies for naps- no problems. After I noticed the pull up was dry for a week straight, we went to undies at night. She wakes up herself at night when she has to pee and calls for me. She does have a potty in her room too in case that's easier for her, but she hasn't used it at night yet. She has had a few accidents, especially on days where she had no nap and is really really tired- but most nights she does great. Good Luck!!

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I am the original poster. DD is fully trained during the day and for nap. Underwear only. At night she wears a pull up. "night time underwear " I cut off fluids 1-2 hours before bed. And I make sure, or at least try to have her pee right before getting tucked in. Sometimes she wakes up dry. Sometimes not. And sometimes she will wake up an call for us to bring her to the potty. After reading some posts on here, I'm not going to stress about the overnights. She will be three in April.

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I did the 3 day potty training MINUS the night time training. No way was I waking my child up at night as I knew that she would wind up in my bed. So I used a pullup at night. She would wet it at night in the beginning. Then after about 1 mth, she started to wake at night to ask to go. So only the nights she woke did I put her on the toilet. Now some nights she stays dry all night, some nights she wakes to ask to go, and some nights she may wet the pullup if she is too exhausted to wake. Works for me. She only wears underwear all day and never has accidents.

Re: potty training question regarding night time
Sorry I got nothing. AJ was already a very consistent dry sleeper before we attempted potty training at all. She wet her bed I guess two times that first week. Another time or two the second then less. Generally she wet herself because it was odd. She knew she had to get up but was too lazy. She quickly realized being wet however was worse.
We did do pull ups at night for about 2 weeks then back to just undies with a wet pad below her sheet, just in case.
I didn't know about the wake them up option but AJ is like me. Once I'm up, I'm up. I can't just go back to bed. If she got up to pee that would be at least an hour deal before she went back to bed.

Re: potty training question regarding night time
Thanks for the feedback. I don't want to wake him either because then he will be up. I guess i will do pull ups for nightime. I just thought it was contradictory to the book and confusing to them. But he hasn't woken up dry yet.

Thanks! I cut off liquids too and he goes before bed. During the day and naps he is dry. I think you are right, they may not be ready for nighttime yet. dS will be 3 in June. Thanks!

Re: potty training question regarding night time
I did a "dream pee" with her. I wouldn't actually wake her up, I would just pick her up and put her on the potty before I went to bed. She never fully woke up and it worked for us. I will say that I'm not sure I would go diaper less if she was not in a bed. She is able to get up and go to the bathroom by herself - sometimes she asks for help. But if she was still in a crib, I would keep her in training pants until she woke up dry.
