Dog bed help....

I need to get my dog off my couch.
He has his own blanket on the couch, and that is the only section he is allowed on. But I would rather he not be on it at all. He is making it a mess.
But the problem is everytime we get him a dog bed/pillow he rips it apart.
Any suggestions?
We have a baby gate blocking the living room. So that is not a problem. I just want him to have something soft to lay on.

(sorry this was so long)
TIA

Re: Dog bed help....

how old is your dog? we went through a couple of beds when our dog was younger but she finally stopped eating them and now just lays on it. she's just over a year old now.

if your dog is not a puppy anymore i would start out with towels or blankets on the floor first (like the one he uses on the couch) and then if he behaves with that get him something with a little padding, then if all goes well you can treat him to the deluxe bed with his name on it Chat Icon

He will be 3 in July.
He has a dog bed in my bedroom and there are no issues with that one.
He will sleep on the carpet by the front door. Or the mat/ towel by the back door. But everytime we put a bed/ pillow for him, he destroys it when we leave the house.
I guess I will start with just his blanket on the floor.
Thank you.

This sounds like separation anxiety. He is destroying his bed as a way to burn off the nervous energy. I would try putting his blanket on the floor. My dog trainer suggests putting large empty cardboard boxes on the couch cushions to block the dog from jumping up. Personally I allow my dog on the couch but it is definitely a personal preference. I have a rather involved protocol to deal with reducing separation anxiety if you are interested.

Re: Dog bed help....

My Mom's dog didn't do well with plush dog beds. She did better with a crate pad. It was only like one inch thick, was designed to fit in her crate...jsut a little bit of padding. She didn't rip that apart at all.

My dog is the same way. She only ever eats the dog bed we put in her crate with her. Now we just have two plush blankets in there instead and a few toys. We've only recently found toys that can withstand her chewing for more than 2 days and don't cost upwards of $50 each. I think the reason she kept chewing and scratching her beds was because she likes to "fluff" them. I catch her fluffing her blankets all the time in her crate. She even does this on our bed or couch. ETA: My dog is almost 4 and she's s pit bull/boxer mix.

Re: Dog bed help....

My kids shredded any beds we bought them up until about a year ago.... they turned 4 and 3 and we bought beds at Costco for $20 each... for what ever reason, they actually sleep on them...

Have you tried wrapping the blanket that is on the sofa around the bed? It may help...

Re: Dog bed help....

We have left him for an entire day several times, and he will sleep on the couch with his blanket no problems.
I just put his blanket on the floor and locked the gate to living room. I won't be gone long but I hope he doesn't start ripping up the blanket.
