Do you think this is messed up?
Somebody who lives about a block away from us, had their home catch on fire earlier today.
I didn't walk over there because DS was napping, and I don't think this is a scene for a 3-year-old even if he was awake.
However, I was completely amazed regarding the number of people who not only went over to the house to stop and stare, but I had about 4 people pull up in front of my house, park their cars and took their kids and wives over to look. (There were a ton of cars on the next block over watching too-----the block the firetrucks had to get down).
One guy stayed in his jeep the whole time after dropping off his wife and kid and heard me and DH talking about how rude we felt this was, especially given the situation and why would you want to bring young kids to witness this (like under the age of 5!!!!).
Soon after FIL who is a retired police detective came over and blamed it on lack of police taking control of the area. ETA: He was on his way to have dinner with us.
This situation really irritated me. I can't quite explain why, but I guess I never knew so many people were just so "nosy" is what I guess I'm getting at. Yeah, it's good in a way, but I know that most of these people had no business being there.

I do think it's messed up but people are just nosey. It's the same behavior that causes rubber necking when there is an accident on a highway, people just have to see what's going on.

Completly messed up.
I would never stop and watch something like this. And I would yell at my dh if he did this.

I get what you're saying, but it's not like this is a main highway where people were passing by.
Cars were coming from every direction to stop, park, get out and gawk. In a residential neighborhood.
As I mentioned above, grown men (like in their 40's and 50's) were dropping of their wife and kids like they were going to the mall or something.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
One of our neighbor's house went on fire not once but twice. You can see the house from my window and my kids are so scared of house fires because of it. Really not a place to take young children at all!

See my first thought would be maybe they wanted to see the family and offer them support, maybe offer to give them food or shelter, toiletries or clothes.
If I saw a fire, I would stop and offer any help.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
I witnessed a terrible house fire when I was a child (young, maybe 5 or 6) and to this day, I am irrationally afraid of house fires. I blame my fears on the fact that my parents brought me there. I think it is ridiculous that parents bring their children to housefires.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
Five years ago (almost to the day - it was April 22, 2005 - I cannot forget how etched it is in my brain) the house behind mine caught fire. We were scared that we would loose our home too. The next day this family with kids on roller blades went into my backyard to take a look at the destruction. The kids were destroying my lawn with their roller blades. I told them to get off of my lawn and out of my backyard. I was livid. I said to the parents how would you feel if I came to your house and destroyed your lawn? You would be pissed off too. So get out of here before I call the police. They started yelling at me that they just wanted a better look. I called the cops and asked them what to do. I put the police on speaker phone and they told the people to get off of my lawn. They did but yeah people are so inconsiderate.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
Yes, I think it's very messed up.
In our first house our neighbors had a house fire in the middle of he night. I wake up my dh because I hear things exploding and I start freaking out. I run to the window and there are 40 foot flames. The fire is melting the guys siding and we are on a dead end. Everyone on the block is outside watching, men, women, kids. They were outside having a party. The best part of it was, no one called the fire dept. I called. Just me freaking out while a neighborhood full of people were roasting marshmallows off of the neighbors burning lawn.
It was crazy. It was a rental neighborhood. I don't know if they thought the fire would just die out on its own. I will never forget that. Needless to say we moved shortly after.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
My mom used to tell us:
If you can't be part of the solution, don't be part of the problem!
As far as the fire goes, my exH's house caught fire. We agreed (with his new wife) that our son (and her son) would not be taken to see the house. I think it would scare the heck out of the kids.
DS is 4 and his step bro is 6. He had a hard enough time loosing their new birthday toys (DS's b/d was 2 days before the fire and step bro's was about 2 weeks and just had his party) and their pets.
I don't understand why you'd want to subject young kids to that image.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
I think I know what you are talking about. I was over there picking up my MIL with DH when we saw the black smoke and MASSIVE traffic.
Not gonna lie, we peaked through the houses as we drove to montauk hwy to see what it was about. House, Car, whatever. We didn't stop and get out.
I saw people doing that - some jumping out of their cars with their cameras. That was just ridiculous.
I hope everyone in that home is OK.
Being that it's your neighbor, if they are in need of anything. Clothes, household stuff, etc please post on here.

I truly mean no disrespect, because I know there are a few honest to goodness decent people out there, but from what I witnessed, this was NOT one of those situations.
It was like TMZ had landed in my front yard.
I know Long Island is not exactly rural, but the thoughts going through MY head were who the fluck are all these people who have just flocked to my neighborhood?
It was truly like a 3-ring circus.
I am still disgusted about it.
I guess you had to be here.

I dont think it is messed up and if it were in my neighborhood we would have done the same. . . I guess it is human nature? I would see if anyone needed help.
Forget it, where I am from, if there is a car accident it brings out over 40 people and people you haven't seen in months. . . just what we do. Its just curiousity, wanting to make sure everyone is ok, and yeah a little bit of wanting to get the "scoop".

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
This recently happened in my neighborhood too and so many neighbors were on the scene. Some were in tears. Some weren't and were on their cells reporting it to friends. There are many civilians who psychologically want to help, but know that they cant run in there- stop it- etc... They can only get so close. The firemen do their job. So they stand, whisper, take pics, stare.... It might even be good if they are there though. If the firefighters have to throw someone out a window or something, one of them could catch. Look at the Stamford Fire. Most people really mean well at heart. I believe that.
Then there are those that have to see the human drama of it all. I dont think that they want to see bad. I just think that they are frozen by such awful. They dont see themselves as getting in the way or not being helpful. Maybe I'm wrong though....

Agreed - I'll never understand why people feel the need to gawk at emergency situations. It's the absolute worse moment in someone's life and I think it's absurd to stand around and watch like it's a show.
My mother is one of these people and it bothers me to no end.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
So if your neighbor's house was on fire, you would sit in your house and continue to watch TV? Glad that I am not part of that type of community. . .
When my dad got into a car accident, a few blocks from home - by the time I got there there were about 20 people standing with him. . . asking if he was OK if he needed a glass of water. . .before we left a woman came out with chocolate chip cookies for the fire department!

To me there is a difference between neighbors coming out to offer help, and people driving from other neighborhoods with their kids like they are going to a carnival. The latter just seems very disturbing to me.

Morbid and creepy and bizarre to me! Same thing with people rubber necking at the site of accidents... or taking a ship out to the wreckage site of the Titanic on it's anniversary.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
Why would it be messed up? Think about the amount of people who stop and stare for a simple fender bender on the highway. A house fire isn't something you see everyday and it's just human nature to be curious. I mean, if people came and set up picnic tables and started grilling food, THAT would be messed up.

Re: Do you think this is messed up?
Personally I'd stay away. Nothing hurt me, upset me more than watching those idiots WATCH the WTC burn. Hell they RAN towards it to watch.
I keep a safe distance and keep the area clear for the fire dept, emt, police whatever.
I would still make sure they were ok and that help was coming but that's it. Go away.
That said, 3 doors down from my aunt's house, a house started to burn. I show up and its pretty much out. I see a smoking sofa out front. I ask what happened and my aunt tells me how they took chairs and AJ sat outside to watch. She was explained to AJ that fire was bad and it was sad, etc. AJ has been unaffected by it. Didn't bother her in the least and she is 3. If she sees a fire she doesnt relate it to the house. She once saw a house on fire on TV and said "... 'member mama that house was on fire at Auntie's..." thats about it.
Letting her watch didn't upset me, per se. Letting her watch a house burn that has asbestos in the siding..... now THAT about had me seeing red. I looked at my aunt and all i said was "Asbestos?" and she had the decency to look ashamed. Yeah it was 3 doors down but still, wind etc. My daughter had no need to inhale any of that crap. Neither does my aunt who uses a nebulizer. But its hard to scold a 70yr old.
The house was a total loss. Nothing is left but the front steps now. No one was harmed.
