Kids born in december
I am so confused about sending my son to kindergarten vs. holding him back another year. What are you guys planning on doing? The cut off for our school district is 12/31.

Re: Kids born in december
I don't need to decide this until next year, but I'm already thinking about it. I've heard people say that no one regrets holding their child back, but some have regretted sending their child early. DH was one of the youngest in his class and did well, but his brother who was also one of the youngest probably would have benefitted from starting 1 year later. It's such a hard decision. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Mine were born 12/30. The won't be going early, the cutoff for our district is 12/1. If it was the 31st, i'd probably hold them back.

Re: Kids born in december
My DD is 12/21. She's only 2.4 right now, but I think when its time I'll probably send her. Our cutoff is also 12/31. I'm a November birthday, and was always the youngest and never had a problem with it.

Re: Kids born in december
DD is Dec 6 and our cut-off is the Dec 1, so I had no choice, however I like that she is the oldest.
I have friends who have twins that were born in the begining of Nov '07 so they should be going to kindergarten with DD this Sept but they are debating whether to hold them back or not.
IMHO I feel like it's better for a kid to be the oldest rather than the youngest.

Re: Kids born in december
My DD's birthday is 11/30 - the day before the cutoff in my district. I have awhile to think about it, but I want to see what she's like socially, emotionally, and academically before making the call.

Re: Kids born in december
My ds will be 5 on Dec 20. He is going to a private school kindergarten next year.
It is a hard decision. But fr us we are confident DS is ready. Academically, he can hold his own with his cousin who is currently in k. He can read about 30 sight words, count to 100, write his name, etc. Maturity wise, he was born mature but he is also the youngest of his cousins and I think BC we do spend alot of time with them, it has encouraged him to act older. He still has 4yo outbreaks f emotion but overall, he is pretty mature for his age. DS is also big for his age, so this may sound odd, but to me it adds to my comfort BC you can't tell he is younger, Kim.
One big factor for us though was DS,s desire to learn. He has a need to understand everything and learn how things work. Currently he likes going to school but says its boring BC he knows what they are teaching. Ie, letter sounds, recognition, etc. I was afraid of creating a cycle of him believing that school was boring.
He goes for his kindergarten evaluation next week, so we will see.
Also, I have a friend who skipped a grade as a kid. She graduated with us when she was 16 and she was in the so I think top % of our class, had a tons of friends, etc.

Re: Kids born in december
My DS was born in November, but the cut-off where we are is 12/1. I decided to send him to kindergarten, because academically, he was more than ready. He does have some social issues, but I think being in school is helping that. I'm very happy with the decision I made to send him. HTH!

Re: Kids born in december
My cut off date was the beginning of December, my son was born in November, I held him back, he just wasn't ready, and now he is doing really well, I think he just needed that extra year. I think it really depends on the child

Re: Kids born in december
My ds misses the cutoff since he is Jan2nd but we thought about testing him in. My dh does not want to. He would rather ds be the oldest in the class and be a little board then be the youngest and struggle. I fought him on it but in the end I know he is right.

Can't speak for all, but I know sme school districts will not do this. You either make the cut off or not, they don't bend the rules.
Some private schools will take them if they are born before Dec 31, however they are supposed to go by you school districts age cut off as well, and should they take you in even if you miss the cut off, you are not eligible for transportation and may have to pay for certain books & supplies in addition to tuition.

Re: Kids born in december
Im upset that my son misses the cutoff. Our cutoff is Dec 1st and he's the 24th. He has to wait another year to start and he is so anxious to go to school! Everyone is different; every child is different. Some are ready and some are not.

Re: Kids born in december
Our cut off was 12/1 and my DD was the cutoff babay and youngest in the class. While intellectually she's in the right grade, socially, she's a grade lower. If she were a boy, i probably would have held her back being on the cut off date.

Our district's cutoff is 12/1 and my DS was born on 12/9. I'll definitely be sending him... I'd rather him be the oldest than the youngest in the grade.

Re: Kids born in december
Thanks everyone. I feel better now that I got some other opinions. I am definitely gonna hold him back. I would much rather him be the oldest than youngest like some of you other ladies said. I have been feeling pressure from family and his private preschool to push him ahead, but I think it will be better if he waits another year. He's not as advanced as some of the other posters children's are. Thanks!
