Question about qualifications - LI districts
I was hesitant to put this out there and I'll probably end up taking it down.
To that end, please don't quote.
I teach in Brooklyn. To be clear, I love teaching and wouldn't want to do anything else. I know that for sure because I'm a career changer. Plus I love my old district where I was a leave replacement.
However, I'm really unhappy at work right now. My commute, the administration, and the school environment are all things that are really damaging my quality of life. I could go on and on but I don't want this to be a venting post.
I am actively looking for a job on LI. I'm certified Social Studies 7-12. I want to sign up for some classes over the summer but first I wanted some input on what might make me more competitive on the island. I was thinking about dual certification in special ed but I also know that literacy is big right now.
What classes can I take or credentials can I get that would be useful and make me stand out to an administrator?
I appreciate any input.

Re: Question about qualifications - LI districts
I don't know if you saw these postings, but Connetquot, Hicksville, and Copaigue all recently had S.S. openings for next year.
In my opinion, special ed is the way to go for secondary school. Many postings say that the dual in spec ed is required or preferred.
I don't know if you're able to speak Spanish, but that could be beneficial, as well. You could then work toward a bilingual extension. Sometimes even just conversational Spanish may make you more marketable, too.
It def stinks working in a bad environment. Hang in there- the year is quickly winding down.
Good Luck!

Re: Question about qualifications - LI districts
This won't necessarily answer your question, but would you consider transferring schools in the DOE. My school will be looking for SS next year. We are a K-8. I could provide you with more information. I'm not in love with my school, but I'm not miserable either. It's a decent school... nice neighborhood.... safe all around.
If not... good luck with your search. I know many LI districts are cutting again this year, but I would get your Special Edu degree... check out Queens. They have an excellent post masters program for students with disabilities.

Thank you to you both!
Yes I applied to all three of those schools.
Any other thoughts?
