Re: Piano Lessons

We started them right before their 5th birthday.

If they know their Left from their right and their ABC recognition they can read the music. Some start even younger. The Suzuki method starts with very young children.

How long did it take them to learn a few notes and even play a melody?

The second lesson.

I'll preface this by saying my DH is very musically inclined. He has perfect pitch and plays 5 instrumentsChat Icon . I was hoping his DNA would dominate.

Checking their lesson notebook:
The first lesson they were introduced to the 1-2-3-4 fingers of their left hand (notes C-D-E-F) and beats.

The second lesson they "composed" their own 3 note "song" and played a song from the piano book.

Each lesson after that differs a bit.

My DD is very focused at reading the notes. The teacher said her focus and attention is atypical for her age. She was playing two simple (one hand, 3 notes) the second week.

My DS seems less focused. He seemed to "fool around" a bit more... just wanting to play aka bang on the keys randomly. The teacher said this is much more typical of kids this age. In this case she took a backwards approach... he would play a few notes, she would write the music as a song, they would name it and he would practice. It took him about 6 weeks to really start to sit and put his full attention into a lesson (30 minutes). BUT... he is completely playing by ear. He is less disciplined about reading the notes... he doesn't and won't Chat Icon But if my DH plays a note just once, DS knows it by hearing it Chat Icon . DH tells me this is good, "he'll be able to jam with anyone"Chat Icon

Their teacher said they are both doing well and progressing nicely. It's interesting to see how she uses different teaching techniques, due their different learning modalities, to get the same result.
