Re: ? for those who moved OOS or plan to move
We moved to Chesapeake VA 6 years ago. It was a huge adjustment for me & to be honest I'm still not settled. We where kinda on a time crunch as there where some family issues we had to take care off. We didn't want to move to FL & we wanted to move to a place where we knew someone so Chesapeake it was. Its a different culture down here. I can't explain it. There isn't alot to do. Shopping is ok. I would move back to NY in a heart beat. If I had to do it again I would spend alot more time researching where I want to live.
Pros - taxes and utilities are cheaper. I was able to go back to college graduate from a Radiology program which I could never have done on one salary.

Re: ? for those who moved OOS or plan to move
I'm moving to Northern VA in a few weeks..picked the location because I got a job there. DH's sister lives in the area so we've been visiting for over 11 years...it's nice but similar to NY. We will be staying with them for awhile...i've been looking at houses using a RE app on my phone...and plan to check out different areas once we are down there to see what we like. I want to live in a more rural area...with at least 1 acre of land...so i've been writing down towns that offer that within a decent price range. But it'll be a year or two before we buy. I figure once I start work I'll ask people where they live & what they like about the town, etc and how their commute is.

Re: ? for those who moved OOS or plan to move
We moved to San Diego (we eventually moved back to NY).
DH was laid off and I hated my job. We thought it was a good time, since we had both loved it there. We took a week vacation in December to look around. We spent the week looking for apartments and found one we liked and signed a lease to start 4/1.
In February, we drove most of our belongings to MIL's house in AZ.
In March, DH left to go to get our stuff and move in and start looking for a job. I wanted to finish up the school year and left a few months later.
I had a summer paycheck that we lived on and DH found a job in August. It took me a full year to find something (b/c schools usually only hire for September).
I wouldn't move with kids unless we had jobs first. When we moved back to NY, DH had the job first.

? for those who moved OOS or plan to move
We just recently moved to the Tampa area. DH lost his job in December and my job wasn't secure. He got a job offer in Tampa and we liked the area so we decided to move down here. I like the area and I get to stay home with my kids for a little bit. I'm looking to go back to school and I probably wouldn't have been able to do that in NY. My DH isn't as happy here so he is going to see if he is able to transfer back to NY in a year or so. DH had been to the Tampa area a couple of times and liked the area. We asked my sister's friend (who has lived here for about 2 years) about which areas we should look into and which areas we should stay away from. We also got a reccomendation about what school districts to look into. DH and I came down in Feb and looked at a ton of houses to rent in 4 days I was here. We found a couple we liked and told the RE agent which ones we were interested in. Once we got housing secured I moved down with our DDs.

Re: ? for those who moved OOS or plan to move
5 1/2 years ago DH and I moved off of LI to Gulf Shores, Al. I am about a half hour drive to the Gulf, 10 min from the Bay. My sister had moved down here 8 years before that. It got to the point that the expense on LI wasn't worth it for us. We both got great jobs here and while the transition was hard in the beginning (first few months) it has been well worth it and I have no desire to move back to LI. I do miss my friends and family but not the location at all. We have had two kids here and I love raising my kids here. You have to research the area and knowing someone there makes it much easier as well!
