Nanny Salary - does this seem reasonable?
I've been in the process of interviewing nannies, and I think I found one that I really like.
It would be from 8AM to 6:30 (so, 10.5 hrs) M-F.
I have 2 kids, a 4 yr old who will be going into full time pre-k (8:30 to 2:30) and a 2 yr old, who will be home with her all day.
I was thinking $700/week, with 2 weeks paid vacation, all federal holidays, and 4 sick days.
It makes me nauseous thinking about how much money that is, but at the same time, I want to offer someone a fair salary . . .
Does this seem reasonable? Would offering $600 be too low?

Nanny Salary - does this seem reasonable?
I think that's a great salary to offer, I would do 1 paid week vacation after a year of an employment though not 2. I might consider trying to offer a lower amount since it's really only 1 child and not very long hours at all. Are you asking for home cleaning at the same time or just strictly care of the children?
I would also consider certifications when discussing the salary.

It might be a bit high but if you really like her it might be worth it.
I would offer her 600-650 maybe and if you are really happy with her give her a raise a few months after she starts. Did she say how much she was looking for per hour?

She comes highly recommended, is first aid trained, CPR certified, and a certified nursing assistant.
No deep cleaning, just cleaning associated with the kids. like after they eat, picking up toys, sweeping the floor, etc.
And I was actually worried that I needed to pay her more bc it is such a long work day (10.5 hrs)
I know that her current employer (whose child is going to school full time, so doesn't need her) gives her 3 weeks vacation.
I don't mind giving her 2 weeks, bc I get 4, and she would just have to take her 2 at the same time I take mine.
I wasn't sure how to approach the salary issue, whether I ask her how much she wants or if I give a proposal. lol
I live in Queens, if that matters. Oh, and it is on the books.

I think that is a very fair salary. I may start at $650 and see if she bites. Since it is on the books, will you also have to pay the employer share of FICA, FUTA and NYDBL? And Worker's Comp? That, in effect, raises her salary. If you don't have it already, you may also want to purchase umbrella insurance since she will be in your home all day. Just for piece of mind.
As for vacation, I would offer a week of your choosing and a week of her choosing, unless your schedules are very flexible.
I researched nannies in Hudson Heights (up & coming part of northern manhattan) and they wanted $12-$15 per hour depending on experience.

IMO that is a crazy amount of money for one child all day (since your older is in school) Are you paying for nursery school on top of that? 
Is that what nannys are going for these days? I also have a 4 yo and 2 yo.

My honest answer...it's a little too much for queens, and not necessary. In all honesty, I think you could put your 2 yo in daycare for the hours that match your 4yo, and get a babysitter/nanny p/t for the remaining hours. it would likely be more affordable, and probably better/easier in the long run. If you had an infant, my answer might be different.

It breaks down to roughly 31,000-36,000 a year and at 600 just under $11.50 an hour 700 just over $13.00 an hour. I think for a qualified actual nanny that is fair. I'm not talking a glorified baby sitter here, but a real live this is her job nanny. You could do daycare or whatever, but if you like her and you can afford it I think it's a very fair salary. I was a nanny and a live in so I made $250 a week. If she is a live out you are fine, if she is a live in...can I be your nanny

That's exactly it. This is someone's full time job. It should be a living wage. She gets no brnefits no insurance. I want to be fair.

I have a nanny 30 hours a week and I give her 13/hour and and extra $20 for gas a week.
If I need her more hours I pay her more of course but I think btw 13-15 is fair depending on what u have her doing. My nanny is not my house keeper. She does only what pertains to my kids. their laundry, very rarely their cooking , stuff like that.
So to answer ur question 700 is very generous.

I was a nanny who worked a 9 hour day for two kids, one being an infant and one being a 3 year old. I initially started at part time and was happy with my salary but when I bumped up to 5 days a week, 45 hrs a week (sometimes more, depending on traffic and if they needed me to stay late, etc.) I was only offered $425 a week. I felt it deserved more, I was using my vehicle to drive the older child to preschool, we went on play dates, library classes, the park and other places. They would give me $20 here and there for gas. I felt that it was underpaid. I think $700 is a nice salary if they're worth it. I know a few nannies who do absolutely nothing with the children; that's why I felt I was underpaid because we were always doing something.. so just make sure the kids will be engaged in everyday activities! There are so many things you can do with a 2 yr old so that's really important!

I grew up in Queens and lived in Queens with my kids for 3 years. I said it's too much for Queens because I had a nanny in Queens watch my 2 kids full time (without one in daycare/preschool) and paid less, and found many nannies willing to accept less. Where I live now (in CT) everything is way more expensive.

It's definitely fair and even if some consider it too fair i think you are doing the right thing...i mean i get that it hurts to spend all that money but IMO spending money on childcare that you feel is best for your children and your lifestyle is literally priceless.
you are paying someone to care for your MOST precious possessions. to me that is a price i don't mind paying. as long as it is still worth it for your to work and put money into your savings etc. then i say you are doing a great thing.

I disagree NY is very expensive unless you are in Greenwich CT ? if not i think ct & ny are the same. What were your nannies qualifications? I think 700 is reasonable regardless of location.

It's a little high IMO. I would offer a little less so you have room to negotiate. I live in queens too and I pay my nanny $500 a week for one kid. It's what she was making at her other job in LI for two kids so she was more than fine getting that for one. I offer two weeks vacation all paid holidays and five sick. She gets paid anytime I take off on top of that too. Geographic location does matter; I interviewed a nanny in this neighborhood who wanted $650 a week and that's the going rate for this part of queens so based on how I got mine I got the sense it's cheaper outside of the city (manhattan, Brooklyn, queens). Also on the books is definitely more; mine is off.

But she's not hiring a nursing assistant so I don't think that's relevant.
I would offer $600. Tbh, not that you asked, I would do like a pp mentioned- pt daycare and a pt nanny. Seems like the best of everything.

I never thought of the part time daycare/pt time nanny option, but I'm not sure it would be that much cheaper.
The daycares by me are around $1400/mo, so that comes to $16,800/yr. They don't do 1/2 days, only partial weeks.
plus nanny for 25hrs/week @ $12 = 15,000/yr
plus extra hours for the nanny for days when DS does not have school (winter/spring break/summer)
I'm going to start with $600 and see where it goes.
