Measuring 2 weeks behind on ultrasound and that has to be impossible!

Ok I feel like I'm not getting a straight answer.

I went in for what I thought was my 8 week ultrasound. I wasn't sure of the exact day of conception because my cycles are always irregular, but i had a positive test on june 22nd- exactly 4 weeks after my last period. So I just assumed that was about 4 weeks at that point.

I went to the doctor 2 weeks later and the doctor even said that I "felt" like I was 6 weeks..

So at the ultrasound 2 weeks after that, I should have been around 8 weeks but I was measuring 5 weeks 6 days with a slow heartbeat. So that would mean I got a positive test before I was even ovulating?!

My doc wasnt even there yesterday- I spoke with the nurse practitioner. I know that sometimes we miscalculate our dates but this makes no sense because I had a positive test!! I also was never told any numbers... No one gave me the size or the heart rate.

They also told me I have a cyst the size of an orange on my ovary. That was icing on the cake!

Can someone please shed some light for me? How is this possible?? How would I get a positive pregnancy test before I supposedly ovulated?!

I am going back in one week but it is going to drive me crazy until then.

its possible .. the baby could just be growing very slowly or have compromised growth Chat Icon it would also make sense with the slow heartbeat.

I Chat Icon that the baby catches up and/or shows an improved steady heartbeat Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - i think your dates are correct, the baby just isnt growing as it should be.

I don't want to make you nervous, but at the same time, you should be aware...

Last year I went in for my first ultrasound and I was measuring off for dates. Heart rate was slow, but now sooo slow. Borderline at 120 beats a minute.

Doctor was very honest with me and said it wasn't ideal and that it could go either way (but most likely wouldn't be viable.)

At first I was very upset that she said that, but then was very appreciative so I didn't get a "shock" the next time when I went back.

The doc was right and it was not a viable pregnancy.

I don't want you to feel all depressed or anything as it could all work out or they could be wrong.... but your doc's office should have told you what the off measurements and slow heart rate could potentially mean for you...

if you were supposed to be 8w and they told you that you measured 5w... i dont understand why that would put your +HPT prior to ovulation? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon that would actually put you 3 weeks EARLIER than what you thought you would be.

regardless, since you have an irregular cycle, are you entirely sure of when you ovulated? was your last AF a real AF or was it light or spotting or weird in any way?

anyway im sorry for what you are going through. hopefully its just a case of dates being wrong. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had something similar with my last pregnancy, but we knew the dates had to be accurate because it was with fertility treatments. First it was measuring a day behind.. then 3... then 5... it never had a strong heart rate... and sadly, it did not end well.

I'm hoping for you it's just a matter of miscalculating the dates!!! I don't mean to be a downer.....

Are you absolutely sure if when u ovulated? When I went for my first appt, based on dates I should have been beyond 8 weeks but was 6 weeks. I apparently ovulated just a few days before AF was due. This can happen with irregular cycles...

Measuring 2 weeks behind on ultrasound and that has to be impossible!

Thanks everyone for your input! Of course every case is different but it's good to hear everyone's stories so I can try to evaluate what might be going on. I do have irregular cycles- and LONG cycles- its almost never 28 days. I found out my mom and sister were the same way. My mom especially because she used to get ovarian cysts often which can throw everything out of whack- and I have a cyst now- and possibly have had others I didn't know about because sometimes I do get really sharp cramps.

Anyway there is definitely a big possibility that I ovulated later and got pregnant later than I thought .

But I still don't understand the pregnancy tests. I could understand being a week/ week and a half off and maybe the test detected it a week early... That is totally possible. But 2 1/2 weeks doesn't seem right. The US tech was a little flaky though so who knows she could have been a little off too.

Anyway i went to dinner with some girl friends tonight and told them I was pregnant and went into the whole story and they all had a story to tell me about them or someone they knew who had a f*cked up ultrasound. They told me I should be happy and excited... And it made me realize that I stopped being excited ever since I had the US. And I want to be happy again- so I am just going to be positive and happy until I have a reason not to be... And hopefully everything will turn out ok! And if it doesn't- we will just try again. But I am choosing to stay positive and have hope!

That is a great attitude. Even though I have had my fair share of losses and disappointments I approached every cycle and BFP with hope because, honestly, you just never know how it will all play out. I know the waiting and uncertainty is torture but right now, you're pregnant. Be happy, hope for the best, and what will be will be. Really hoping for you that it all works out in the end. Chat Icon
