breastfeeding ??
sorry, another breastfeeding question. When you are feeding DC do you detach them after a certain amount of time per side? and if yes after how long?
or
do you let them feed until the detach themselves? and if yes, about how long does it take for you DC do detach themselves on average?
ETA - how old is your DC?
TIA

Re: breastfeeding ??
I always let DD unlatch herself.
The sessions will get shorter as they get older. In the beginning it can take 20-40 min or more. By 12 months DD could be done in under 5 minutes!

Re: breastfeeding ??
I let him detach, unless he falls asleep (sometimes he will still hold on asleep.) I agree it gets shorter with age, but he can sometimes still do a marathon session at 9 months, and other times is too distracted for any longer than a few minutes.

breastfeeding ??
DD is 3 months. I let her detach herself, unless she falls asleep or is just hanging out for a while. She takes her time, usually about 40-45 minutes although occasional she'll only do 15-20.

Re: breastfeeding ??
I let DS detach himself. He usually does about 10 minutes on both sides (20 minutes total). Unless he falls asleep on one side. If I have time to just sit, I let him hang on for a while. If not, I usually detach him and put a pacifier in his mouth. This is my second, so I don't have a lot of time to just sit and BF for long periods of time. He took alot longer to BF in the beginning. Usually around 30-40 minutes.
Ds is 4 months

Re: breastfeeding ??
I let ds detach on his own but the longest he ever went was 15 min on each side.. If you can tell that he's just using you as a pacifier instead of drinking and its been longer than that i'd detach him. You can tell by the way they are swallowing.

Re: breastfeeding ??
DS1 would nurse for at least 45-60 minutes, especially as a newborn. I'd detach him after about 30 minutes on one side and then switch sides. If he was nursing for around an hour, I'd detach him. Usually he was fine, but if he started to fuss, I'd put him back on.
DS2 only nurses for about 15-20 minutes before falling asleep so I usually on detach him if there's an issue with his latch.

Re: breastfeeding ??
My DS never really "detaches" he pulls off and on off and on a lot especially if he isn't starving, but will happily stay attached as long as I will let him (sucking but not swallowing I think??) This is my biggest frustration because i can never tell if he is "done" and sometimes I think he is done but he is just distracted and then wants to be back on 10 minutes later (or so I think). He is 10 weeks old. Any tips?? I want to make sure he is getting enough to eat as he never seems totally "done" (though will spit up milk as if he is over full and then want back on again)

Re: breastfeeding ??
DS has always been a fast nurser so I never really had to unlatch him. Now at 16 months he likes to hang out after he is done and watch tv while using me as a paci, so now I make him unlatch or he would never let go

Re: breastfeeding ??
thank you for all the information I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. I typically let her unlatch unless she is sleeping on me and not really eating anymore. thanks again
