Cost of kid's birthday cake
What is the most that you would pay for a child's birthday cake?
So, I am shopping around for birthday cakes for my DS' second birthday and I am getting severe sticker shock and I am starting to think maybe I am insane for actually thinking of paying $$$ for a child's 2nd birthday cake where most of it might even just end up in the garbage.
His birthday theme is The Jungle Book, so I found a bakery in the city that would do a specific cake that they had done in the past. They gave me a quote if $250 for a 14" square. (which would feed up to 60 people)
Here is a pic of the cake (there is also decorations on one side)
Here is the front side:
I also got a quote from a bakery in brooklyn for $660. How insane is that?
Any suggestions as to where I can get a custom cake with buttercream at a more reasonable price. Right now, I am not interested in looking at BJs or Costco.
Thanks!

Re: Cost of kid's birthday cake
For a cake that will feed 60, I think that over $200 is the going rate :0 That design looks great though.

Cost of kid's birthday cake
I'd just get a BJ's cake.... they feed alot, and its more money that can be spend on the kids gifts, or added to their savings...... jmo...
Maybe a photo cake would be a good way to go to get decoration at lower cost.

Re: Cost of kid's birthday cake
Why not see if a bakery near where you live will do a cake you love and print out a photo that they can put onto the cake? My bakery did that and I had a 2 tier cake for DH's 40th b-day and it was less than $200.

Re: Cost of kid's birthday cake
I would (and have) order a nice simple sheet cake with your favorite filling from your fave bakery and order an edible cake image of Jungle book. They may even put it on for you. Simple and does the trick in a much cheaper way. I couldn't bring myself to spend $$ like that. This way we spent about $70 total I think for DS's 4th bday cake.

Re: Cost of kid's birthday cake
Sheet cakes that feed 60 should not be anywhere near $200 from a bakery The bakery I use charges close to 90 for a full sheet that feeds 60-75. My friend makes tiered fondant cakes and I think she charges $3 a slice, so that would make a 60 person cake close to 200.

How many people are you inviting. IMO half of the guests dont eat the cake when you have other desserts. Are you having anything else? If so you might want to go smaller?
