who did NOT sleep train?
Im really dreading this. DS is 4 mos and falls asleep when we rock him. Never tried putting him in crib and seeing what happens but I feel like rocking him is less of an ordeal and will take less time. Anyone not sleep train and their child naturally falls asleep on their own now?

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
I did not sleep train DD at all. We just followed her cues and went with it. We put her down awake with no problem (and it's been that way since she was probably about a month old). There is hope but every kid is different of course.

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
We didn't really need to either. I nursed DD at bedtime and she usually fell asleep and then I put her in her crib. By 5 months or so, she was falling asleep only half the time, but even when she was awake I'd just put her in her crib and she'd roll over and go to sleep. By 7 months, she was always awake after nursing, and I'd sing her a song, put her in her crib awake, and she'd play for a few minutes and then go to sleep.
I did have to let her CIO when I wanted her to stop waking up for middle-of-the-night feedings at 4 AM, but that's a different issue. And it only took 2 days because she was already so good at falling asleep on her own.

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
We never really did. I tried putting DD down awake like they say from day one and it never ever worked for her. She'd either scream immediately, no matter how sleepy she was or she'd wait a min or two before screaming until we picked her back up. We tried over and over for the first year and it never worked.
CIO isn't for me. DH would have been willing but I just can't. DD nursed to sleep or was rocked by DH or a grandma when I was at work. Finally around 13 months she stopped falling alseep while I was nursing her and would actually let me put her in the crib awake and go to sleep herself. It was a miracle. She's 16 months now and a great sleeper both for her nap and nighttime.

I really did not. My kids woke up at night until they were about 9 months old. I finally did some modified CIO to get them to STTN

This is exactly what we did too. I did read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" to have a point of reference.

I have tried to avoid it but at 10 months old DS is getting up 4 times a night and screaming before bed also so we just completed day one of ferberizing. It sucks but in our case we have no choice.

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
I didn't. I am not really into doing ANYTHING formally. DD didn't sleep through the night until almost 7 months old- but when she was ready she did it on her own. I can't follow rules, etc It makes my head hurt!

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
I wish I didn't have to. Neither of my kids were able to get to sleep on their own as infants. We'd put them down sleepy & they would scream their heads off. At 4-5 months, DC#1 cio for 2 days & he became an amazing sleeper & napper after that. DC#2 is 2 months old now & willsleep great at night but not nap at all during the day, which is causing me to loose my mind, At 5 months, I am definitely cio with him.

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
i never really sleep trained DS. i used to let him fall asleep in my bed and then i would transfer him but then i wanted him to be able to sleep on his own so now our routine is i give him a bottle in my bed and i sit with him with the lights off, tv on. this mellows him out a lot. shortly after he finishes his bottle i put him in his crib awake. i leave a toy in the crib and sometimes i hear him playing with it til he falls asleep. other nights he just tosses and turns a bit and then falls asleep.
i used to rock him to sleep when he was a few months old. he got used to no rocking. hes almost 14 months now

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
We did not...at least I don't think so since I'm not 100% sure what sleep training is! For the first 2 months I nursed DD to sleep at night. It was exhausting and sometimes took several tries.
Around 2 months I started putting her down in the crib for naps and then at night. In the beginning I would hang out in her room and clean up or fold laundry. I would rub her tummy if she was worked up but she's always been good at soothing herself. We would sing songs and distract her with her musical seahorse. Now at 3.5 months she goes down, sometimes cries for 30 seconds, then pops her thumb in and is fine. Sometimes she just chills out for a while on her side sucking her thumb but eventually falls asleep.

We didn't because fortunately, our DS STTN when he was 6 weeks old, and has been ever since.

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
We were against sleep training, until ds was 22 months old still not sleeping (we also had an 8 week old). One night we were woken Up a total of 8 times between older ds and the newborn, we had to resort to CIO. I hated it and things got better but not 100%
With ds 2 we again had to resort to CIO at 20 months. Still not 100%.
Neither child is a great sleeper, and I feel like we needed to do CIO but didn't have the heart. Now they have a hard time falling and staying asleep at 2 and 3 ( almost 4) years old

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
no way! couldn't do it...don't believe in it. i still hold him until he falls asleep and then put him down in his crib, but it doesn't take long...we read three short books, sing a couple songs and he is done. sometimes he asks to go in his crib, sometimes he just passes out.
to be honest, i don't see what is so important about a baby knowing how to put themselves to sleep. if they do it naturally, AWESOME! but if they need, you well, you are their parent, that's what you are there for. just hold them and i totally find that if you aren't all uptight about it and anxious for them to fall asleep, they do fall asleep so much quicker and easier! they totally feed off of your emotions!
my son has slept through the night since he was about 6 months old.
good luck :)

Thank you for writing this. We had a rough night last night (First in a while) and I needed to read this today. I don't believe in CIO at all....I let him cry for 5 mins last night and feel terrible about it...kicking myself today.

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
I never did anything specific to get my DD to sleep, I just followed her lead. At 8 weeks old she started STTN and within a few months of that she had her own predictable napping schedule.

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
Every child is so different. Just looking at DS and dd... DS needed sleep training and retraining. DD will sleep easily, on her own, through the night since 3 months. DS still wakes Up at times at 2 years old.

i agree- i dont "get it" either..
there are so many things we "should" be doing- my head spins from it!
honestly if you have to hold your baby for a little extra time, what is the big deal? what is there better to do anyway?
i can see if its a long drawn out affair that takes hours- fine. but a few extra minutes?
i never understood this

Re: who did NOT sleep train?
I did not sleep train. I loved holding them and they loved to be held. Now at 5 and 2.5, I would give anything to have a baby to rock to sleep again.
both go into bed at 7:45 for the night, no fighting. It took 2 years each, but they go.
up until then i nursed or rocked to sleep.
having a sleeping baby on me is like a drug. there is no better feeling. I never want to cry myself to sleep...it sounds silly but i never wanted them to feel like i was mad at them. i gave them this great day and never wanted it to end on a sour note.
good luck!

who did NOT sleep train?
thanks everyone. You know the funny thing is that most of our parents never did this with us and we can all fall asleep fine. I feel more comfortable following DS's lead and if it gets out of hand I will address it then!
