For those who have babies that sleep through the night, did you sleep train or did they just sleep through the night on their own?
I'd really like to have DS sleeping through the night before my maternity leave is up. DS sleeps well but still wakes up for a quick feeding/diaper change.
Any tips on getting him to sleep the whole night? How did you do it? Did your DC just start sleeping through the night on their own?
After not swadding him for 2 months, I started swaddling him again. I don't think it necessarily keeps him asleep though because he still wakes up for his feeding. He has been napping better (NEVER in his crib - only in our arms, swing, car, or stroller) during the day.

DD slept through the night at 6 weeks (sporadically) and around 10 weeks (regularly).
It just happened spontaneously, which is a good thing be cause I think that is way too young for any kind of sleep training.

DS has never went to sleep on his own. We actually can't put him down without him starting to cry. He constantly wants to be held or bounced. I don't know what to do. My arms/back are killing me!

Re: For those who have babies that sleep through the night, did you sleep train or did they just sleep through the night on their own?
I think I inadvertently trained DD to sleep through the night. There were some nights when I was just too exhausted to get up that she would have to cry for a little bit before I would snap out of it and get up. Well I think that it taught her to self soothe and from then on she only got up when she really needed something.

Re: For those who have babies that sleep through the night, did you sleep train or did they just sleep through the night on their own?
She started on her own. There are RARE occassions when she wakes up at 3-4 am, but I let her cry and she'll really only do it for a couple of minutes and go back to sleep. I have a video monitor, and when she does that, I know it's not because she needs something as she's actually still asleep when she cries, but she knows how to self soothe so that's why I don't run in there.
Like Jen, we put Samantha down wide awake and she puts herself to sleep.

A little of both I think. I read the Healthy Sleep Habits book, but I also just went with his cues and all of the sudden at 11 week he slept through. A big part of it was getting him on the right formula and hitting a certain weight.

I don't think you can "teach" babies. You can find ways to do a routine but you cannot control if they will wake up at night or not.

Personally, I think routine is key. You have to find one that you are comfortable with, and stick with it. At our 6 week appt the ped recommended the 4 B's:
~ bath ~ bottle ~ book ~ bed
We rarely deviate from it and DD has been sleeping through the night since a little past 6 weeks.
I will also say that was the same time we got her out of our room and into her own (another ped recommendation). I think that makes a huge difference.

I agree with this but I probably feel even more strongly about it. I do not even think you can really train a routine into infants. We never did any sort of sleep training and never even tried any of the old wives tale tricks to steer him to learn night from day. We had a very happy baby who was rarely cranky and figured out all of that a lot faster than the babies whose parents were practically making charts and timing the moon to get the baby to sleep when and how they wanted them to.

She started sleeping 6 hour stretches at 5-6 weeks....but didn't sleep through the night until we tried CIO at 8 months.

To clarify, DS is a HUGE routine child. So for us, doing things a particular way was a way to "prep" him for bed. Routine was BFing, laying together in bed for "calming" time. Singing lullabies, etc.. That's what I call routine.

every baby is different. I drove myself insane with the b's. dark house, no tv.
it did not matter, he wanted to be held 24/7.

I think I am using the word routine to mean schedule and I may want to re-phrase. I don't think that you can train a kid for a 1PM naptime if it is not natural for him at that point in his development, etc. Maybe for a day here or there you can.
When it comes to what you do to prep them for bed, I am not even sure if you can dictate which actions are calming for a specific child. For one kid, reading might be stimulating but for another it signifies relaxation. I think that parents often have to figure out our kid's best bedtime prep routines rather than trying to steer them to the ones we want to use.

ITA.
I let DS do it on his own, and although I was a zombie for the first 2 months, it got better at 3 months, and now at almost 5 months, he sleeps from 930pm-5am, feeds, and goes back til 730ish. They will work it out on their own.
Like you, DS will only nap in my arms. This is a problem I have no solution for. But at least he sleeps on his own at night.

Jacob started sleeping through the night at about 3.5 months but we had to rock him until 6 months. At about 6 months, we let him CIO. We were lucky, it took only 20-40 minutes and 2 nights...but that was enough

At 6 months DD started STTN all on her own...6/7-6am.
Before that she would be up maybe once, sometimes 2x a night for a feeding.
