I guess it depends on the disctrict, but my cousin teaches 1st grade inclusion and she even admits that some of the kids that are placed in her class should not be there. Some of them are violent and severely delayed. My son doesn't start kindergarten until next year, but because of hearing the stories from her, I'd be leary of wanting my child in an inclusion class. Again, I'm sure it is different by district, but I guess her perspective has affected my opinion of inclusion classes.

This is what I'VE seen exactly at my old school which ONLY had Inclusion classes(and which is why I personally wouldn't want my DD in there), and no other environments. I'm at a new school now so I'll see what I experience here and update at a later date.

This really makes me sad for the special needs children as well as the gen ed children. No one is getting the education they should. The district can not be meeting their state requirements regarding special education by only have inclusion classes. I hope for all the kids some one challenges them on it soon.

In all the inclusion classes I have seen and parents I have spoken too have really enjoyed the experience. Extra hands to help the kids and it really teaches them compassion and understanding.

As far as violent episodes, it happens to both special needs kids as well as the gen ed kids no matter what class your in.

My district doesn't start inclusion classes into the first grade

I wonder how that is even possible, since there could be classified kindergaten kids that are recommended for inclusion. Where do those kids go then? Out of district?

I don't know all the details but my district has a self-contained Full-day K in one school.

I was told by the psych women inclusion starts in first grade and they only have another teacher in the class for about 45mins a day. they don't call it inclusion anymore either.

From what I understand, if it happens to every child in the grade rotation, it's better it happens sooner than later, in older grades when they actually have to study more, prepare for tests and souls get as much as possible out of the classroom.

I student taught there in an inclusion kindergarten class back in '98-'99. They do have inclusion kindergarten classes.

A sincere thank you to everyone taking the time to thoughtfully respond to my post. I really appreciate it.

I'm hearing mostly positive things, which puts my mind at ease, but the thought of violence, etc. scares me! I'm hoping that is not the norm and will not be an issue. I guess there is always a chance of that even in a general ed class if there are any behavioral issues, just more of a risk in an inclusion class.

Thank you again to everyone for sharing your experiences! I appreciate everyone's feedback. Any others... please share!

Non-inclusion K classes are just as likely to have kids with behavioral issues too- the schools really don't know the children yet. I'm sure they're aware of kids who get speech, etc, at the preschool level but that is probably the extent of it.

Absolutely!

The special needs students were carefully selected (as were both teachers... Especially a gen Ed teacher the district knew would not only work well with all students, but another adult in her room as well!)

Behavior issues will usually be addressed with lots of support. Most of my consultations were in inclusion settings as part of the program. It worked really well!

The gen Ed kids learn tolerance and also how to be little teachers. They also get to meet lots of new adults who sometimes push in.... Speech, psych, ot, social work, etc.

Oh okay, I must have misunderstood. I thought you meant they don't have an inclusion class in the entire district for K. That makes sense. Our home school does not offer an inclusion class either for K. Just a self contained.

Hi! I am a special education teacher that works with a general education teacher in a third grade inclusion class. Let me start by saying that an inclusion class is NOT considered a special needs class as a pp mentioned. It is a general education class point blank. Just because there are identified children in it does not make it a special needs class. In my district not just any special needs student gets placed into this class. We have a spectrum of services- 6:1:2, 12:1:1, inclusion, resource room and consultant teacher models. The children are placed in a program based upon their abilities and current needs. Therefore, the children placed into an inclusion class are there because they are able to be educated in a general education setting with the support of a special education teacher. If they needed more, they would be in a different setting.
I have had nothing but positive experiences with this model. It is a lot of work for the teachers to make sure that everyone gets what they need and that all the work gets differentiated, but it is so worth it for both types of students. The general education students get to see that there are all type of learners in this world and they feel good about themselves when they get to be positive role models for other students. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask! Chat Icon

Well said. I am the gen ed teacher in an integrated classroom. I teach first grade inclusion. I wish my daughter could be in this type of classroom setting. Two teachers, lower class size and more one on one attention. We are at the same pace as a general education classroom. At times some of the students struggle with the everyday work. We modify, reteach or adjust curriculum accordingly. We don't just do that for the students that are special ed. We do that for whomever needs it. Hope that helps.

DS#1 was a typical student in an inclusion 1st grade and it was great. He actually told me he was lucky, b/c he had three teachers (gen ed, sped and the aide!)

DS#2 is going into the K inclusion class and is the SN student. I am sad that people think that he should be kept away from typical kids. He is bright (his IQ is higher than 85+% of the class) and very sweet (anything BUT violent).

Perhaps if someone cannot find compassion, they should request your child be moved.

My work district does not have inclusion or self contained. any SN child goes into a typical classroom and you would not believe the genuine compassion the other children gain. The caring, the protection, the inclusion is something that cannot be taught.

I have a different perspective, and I am a Kindergarten Teacher and my own child is a year away from entering Kindergarten. I would be upset if my GE child was put in a CTT class and I'd request her to be changed. I am sure there are ones that work, don't get me wrong, but I've seen this environment first hand for many years and do feel that there is a lot of distraction for a GE child in a SN class. JMHO.

WOW!!!!!!! what ignorance!!!!!!! this comment really gets me upset. i have 2 special needs children and it absolutely breaks my heart when we go to the playground and my DS is made fun of by the other kids because he is different! We wonder where kids learn this behavior and comments like this answer that question!!! so thanks for your honest opinion!!!!!! now you have mine on you!!!!!!! i really think this is a horrible way to be and i seriously hope you will never be in my place with special needs children who need to learn and experience what "typical" children do and play!

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

And if we are talking about violent children, that is a totally different situation, but i have never in my experience with special ed for my son had to deal with any violence with any children. if they are violent they shouldn't even be in the school district. they should be in a special school that can handle that type of behavior. so don't get me wrong violent children need extra help in a different environment.
but if we are just talking about special needs with no violence, yes they should be intergrated. it teaches patience, tolerance and human kindness. i guess some of us were never taught that!

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

As a child of a SN, I will put my input on this.

Integrated classes are NOT for severly delayed children, behavioral children, autistic children.

They are REGULAR classes that include some kids with SN. Most of those kids have ADHD, or very borderline on the spectrum. Those special needs are academically up to par. They just need extra help.

So they DON'T belong to SN/special ed classes where MY kid goes (or like someone put it "THOSE kids" should be).

Now, the State is cutting funding and "those kids" end up back in the SD. it's not the SD's fault. It's the State and when nobody thinks cutting SN funding would not affect anyone... it does!!!

Some SD have great integrated classes and some will have kids that should not be there. It's not the kids fault, it's not the parent's fault, it's not the SD' fault. If a kid is academically up to par, they fall through the cracks. And a borderline kid or ADHD will NOT be accepted in a SN school especially at Kindergarten level. There is not enough room already for the SN kids with more delays.

MOST integrated classes are successful. But you will hear some horror stories. It's not the generalization. Most integrated program are great.

It teaches kids to learn about other kids. SN kids IN GENERAL do not slow down the typical children.

As a mother of 2 special needs children, this hurts! You're teaching your child(ren) the wrong! ALL kids should be treated equal..YOU are a teacher! YOU should know that! Very sad!

Our district has half day Kindergarten, but, special ed is full day! I was told that the SN students do go into the typical K room for reading, snack, or an activity so they can get to know the typical kids as well.
I LOVE this and I'm happy my child(ren) will be included with everyone!

This is not true at all. There are plenty of autistic children, children with Downs, severely academically delayed children in integrated classes. Most of the time these children will have aides with them to assist in keeping on task or assisting in teaching if they can not keep up. There are also plenty of children that have been given accommodations in their IEP or 504 plans that lessen testing times or amounts of homework.

As I said in a previous post, if the child is violent they should not be in an integrated class for the safety of all, but if the child is physically able and their parent wants them to be integrated then they should. Peer models are one of the best ways to learn.

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

My friends kids were in an inclusion class for 1st grade. She was very upset about it at first. But as the year progressed, she was happy about it. She said that even though there were more kids, because there were 2 teachers, the kids did a lot more in the classroom than the kids in the general ed classes were able to do. Now she hopes for inclusion every year!

Re: DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

I've heard inclusion classes are great. The way I understand it, the GE students that are placed in there have done well on the kindergarten placement testing.

My DS went through EI and CPSE up until he went to kindergarten. He went to kindergarten as a general ed student and is moving on to first grade as GE without any extra help. He's doing pretty well, but struggles a little bit with handwriting.

There are students in his class that have push in services. I'm pretty sure 1 kid has a teacher or an aide with him.

My point is- you're going to have a mix of students with different abilities and needs in every classroom. In an inclusion class you have extra teachers and aides to accommodate those needs.
Most of the time it works out really well for all the children.

If it were me I would give it a try.

Those were only example of the type of kids. So if we must be so "detailled", children with special needs in integrated classed are highly functioning children.

Classic autism is NOT for integrated classes.

I wanted to add here that there is not one SINGLE way that inclusion classes are formed. They all don't "look" the same. It is not a formula - each district has their own interpretation and implementation.

My DD is a high-functioning autistic and is in an inclusion class with a 2:1 aide.
This is the saddest thing I've read in a long time. Way to be tolerant and accepting that everyone is different.

DS is an inclusion class for Kindergarten...

DD is in NYC public schools and will be going into a CTT K class this week. I believe CTT is the same as inclusion. At first I was concerned but after doing some research and speaking to the principal and teachers all I heard was positive feedback. I believe someone even mentioned that kids tend to excel quicker in the CTT classes as oppose to a regular gen ed class. I also like the fact that there will be an extra adult in the room especially for K. DDs school is one of the better schools in our district and all classes except for the G&T classes are CTT.

I am a Middle School teacher and the mother of a Kindergarten student. Every year, I teach 5 classes throughout the day. One happens to be an inclusion class...and it is taught in an IDENTICAL way to my other classes. Generally, the students in that class are better behaved than my other classes, to be honest!
I love inclusion, and given the choice, I would request my daughter be put in an inclusion class! I love seeing students show their different strengths...and help each other out. It's such a wonderful thing to see....

No need at all to be so nasty. I gave MY honest opinion from MY experience. I am a well-respected teacher and I would NEVER turn by back to any child, of any need EVER so think before you speak, you don't know
me! I stated what I've seen first hand (and my experience has been with violent children)and have once again, my own personal feeling based on MY child.
