running question-you may laugh
Those people who are doing 10k, halfs, and marathons....are you actually running/jogging the ENTIRE time? Do you take time out to walk here and there?
I just got started with running and was wondering what people do.

Re: running question-you may laugh
So, when I started running I had the same thought. I couldn't do more than maybe a quarter of a mile actually running. Over time though I built it up. So far my longest straight distance is 4.25 miles of actual running without stopping - I do slow my pace as needed but I never stop jogging. I plan to build up to 10 miles - that is my first goal. But the way to do it is to start how you are now, with alternating walking/jogging, and then slowly increase the distance you jog in small increments.
Good luck!

Re: running question-you may laugh
I haven't run a full marathon, but I've done 10ks, 10 milers, and half marathons.
I've run the entire distance. Occasionally I'll walk through one or two water stops during a half.

Re: running question-you may laugh
I have probably walked at every distance, but usually I don't.
Just to put things in perspective, I was an All County cross country runner. Some of you know Sunken Meadow and Cardiac Hill, I walked up that hill EVERY time (at the steepest part). I did have a fast walk, where I would take giant steps up and I really didn't go much slower that some girls who ran up (even faster in some cases). When I got to the top, I was so rested, I could pick people off over the last mile.
from Hal Higdon:
Walking breaks: Walking is a perfectly acceptable strategy in trying to finish a marathon. It works during training runs too. While some coaches recommend walking 1 minute out of every 10, or even alternating running and walking as frequently as every 30 seconds, I teach runners to walk when they come to an aid station. This serves a double function: 1) you can drink more easily while walking as opposed to running, and 2) since many other runners slow or walk through aid stations, you'll be less likely to block those behind. It's a good idea to follow this strategy in training as well. You will lose less time walking than you think. I once ran a 2:29 marathon, walking through every aid station. My son Kevin ran 2:18 and qualified for the Olympic Trials employing a similar strategy. And Bill Rodgers took four brief breaks (tying a shoe on one of them) while running 2:09 and winning the 1975 Boston Marathon. Walking gives your body a chance to rest, and you'll be able to continue running more comfortably. It's best to walk when you want to, not when your (fatigued) body forces you too

Re: running question-you may laugh
5ks, 10ks, I run the entire time.
Half Marathons I run the entire time except for one water/gel break at about the 6.5 mile mark (like 15-20 secs of walking max)
I took 2 water/gel breaks when I ran a 25k (15.5 miles)
Marathon I planned on walking through every water stop (every 1.5 miles, 30 secs of walking). I ended up having to walk more (a lot more!) after mile 20 when I started getting hip pain. I also took a bathroom break, washed my face, and slapped myself a few times in the face while looking in the mirror. LOL. And stretched.

Re: running question-you may laugh
It depends on how I'm feeling. There are times when I'll run the entire thing & other times I'll walk a bit if I feel crampy or while I have a drink. It depends on distance as well... I pretty much always run an entire 5K or 10K, but during the one full marathon I did, I took many walk breaks.

Re: running question-you may laugh
i definitely walked after 13 miles and at every mile for a bit when i did the NYC marathon (i've done 6 and have walked in all of them-no shame :) i don't really do shorter races anymore but even on my training runs i walk...for some runners it's a totall NO NO but for me, it's how i get through the distance. i am not one to get caught up with speed and time etc. i leave that for the professionals!

After the wall, I have an internal fight with myself to run through the pain and finish quicker or walk with slightly less pain and prolong the agony...LOL

Re: running question-you may laugh
I usually run the entire time and the furthest I have ever run was a half marathon. I don't think I could do anything longer and if I did, I would most definitely need to walk

Re: running question-you may laugh
Depends on how well I'm trained. I've ran an entire half marathon at a pretty decent pace and also walked 4 mile races when I just couldn't do it. If you are properly trained, you can definitely run an entire race, assuming you have no injuries.

running question-you may laugh
I'm training for a half right now and I don't take walking breaks. I run straight through usually (I'm up to 8 miles). During the race though I will probably stop somewhere in the middle for water. Any other race- 5k's or 10k's I run the entire time.
