Children getting a bus to school
I would like to know if anyone was able to get their children bused to school when the distance was not far enough and how did you do it. I have been remeasured and I still can't get a bus. My children have to cross 3 major roads with no crossing guards. I am working with the police department on this issue but I still would like them to get bused. I am 1.1 miles and busing starts at 1.2 miles. I went to the Board of Ed meeting and that didn't work. Both are getting special ed so I can try that way but I would like tio know if anyone has done anything different and won. Thanks!!
P.S I work and I have no one to carpool with.

If they are in special education, I would request a mini bus with door to door transportation. Depending on their diagnosis you could cite that they cannot safely cross the road due to the nature of their disability. I would call the director of special education and you will likely have a meeting to add it to the IEP.

Re: Children getting a bus to school
My DS is special ed and gets the bus door to door. You definitley should call the district and explain that piece of it. They should have offered you the bus. Even in pre-k my DS got a bus.

Children getting a bus to school
from my understanding, if they have an IEP it is mandated by LAW that they get door to door busing. even if you lived across the street from the school.
My DS is special ed we live 10 houses from school and they offered him a bus (no crossing roads, just 10 houses from his school) they were actually shocked i turned it down

Only if it is a health and safety risk to send them on the regular bus. The law is least restrictive environment.

I went on the internet and it said that it has to be in their IEP. I have to probably schedule an appointment for another CSE meeting and have it added to it. It is not in their IEP.

Re: Children getting a bus to school
You dont need an other meeting just to add busing, they can do an ammendment to the iep. The will send home a paper for you to sign stateing that you are in agreement with the change. Just stress the healthy and safety concern that walking to school poses for your child.

Children getting a bus to school
One has an IEp but transportation is not mentioned in it. The other one has a 504 Plan. I should mention that they are 11 year old twin boys. They are in 7th grade. One has to stay the extra period because he has resource room during the day and there is no crossing guard when he gets out of school. They have to cross 3 busy streets and it is very dangerous.
