Can you share why? I remember reading years ago about people wanting the word God to be removed or optional, I can understand that. But I am not clear on the rest of the words and why not say it?

I was actually shocked to see that they are not saying it in some schools. My kids are in NYC Public Schools and DO say it every morning.

My school says it every morning before the announcements and at the beginning of all meetings (i.e. PTA, etc.)

I would feel better if "under God" was removed as it is not our (my family's) religion. My son in K thought it was "under golf" and I was kind of happy about that. If you substituted "under Buddha" would people be upset?

Even if it were removed, I don't like the idea of a pledge as it feels like compulsory speech; indoctrinating all these young minds with words from the government. I exercise my First Amendment right by not saying it. I will say that I do try to be not conspicuous about not saying it. After 9/11 a 9th or 10th grader noticed that I wasn't saying it and asked me about it, but that is the only notice that I know about.

ETA: I do always ask students to stand when it is announced to do so, but if they don't (I had one student that wouldn't stand - which is within his rights as long as he doesn't disrupt others from saying it) I don't make a big deal. I do insist on quiet though.

we say it everyday. Im SO FED up with poeple now being offended because it has under God!!!!!
seriously, it is a DISRESPECT to your country. If you cant get up and say it, then get the heck out of the USA, or at least be respectful and stand for our culture!!!!!

So tell me how you really feel about me. This is pretty disrespectful to me and my First Amendment rights. If you are so Pro-America, how about supporting the document that is the foundation of the country. What a bad attitude "love it or leave it." I don't have to abide by your doctrine to be an American. You don't know how I support my country and fellow neighbors. You have such anger. Instead of disrespecting people's religious or political views, maybe try telling people what it means to you.

It's a good thing that the founding fathers did not have this "love it or leave it" mentality. Actually, Thomas Jefferson had the exact opposite:

Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness



- that little old document, Declaration of Independence.

I just wanted to add a bit to this with respect to the phrase 'Under God', if I may. The phrase 'Under God' did not get added to the pledge until the 1950's. "The decision of Congress to add "under God" to the Pledge was, at least in part, a reaction to the Cold War with Soviet Russia. One of the differentiating factors between Soviet Communism and American Democracy was that the Soviets officially advocated atheism. The phrase "under God" was seen, therefore, to reaffirm an important distinction between the two competing worldviews. [Source: Religion and the Law in America, p. 110-12]."

One of the great things about our country is religious freedom. Thousands of American citizens practice hundreds of different religions. Some believe in God, some believe in a god or multiple gods, some don't believe in god at all. One can be patriotic without referring to a god in the pledge of allegiance. And one can still be patriotic without reciting the pledge of allegiance upon command.

To say to someone that if they don't say the pledge of allegiance that they are disrespectful and should leave the country is completely ignorant. This isn't Nazi Germany.

Im sorry. I didnt mean it like that. I feel that people who dont stand for the pledge is being disrespectful to their country. I will stand by that...my opinion.

I dont know why this turned into a religious thing. However many gods somone believes in...you do the pledge as a us citizen.
