My grandfather used to sing a bunch of silly songs:
Mairzy Doats
Wait a minute. Hold up. The link is blocked on my work computer but I am dying to know if this is the song I sing to DD. And I have it totally wrong!! If it's the same thing... I thought it was "Mares eat Oats"
I sing to her: Mares eat oats and does eat oats And little lambs eat ivy A kid'll eat ivy too Wouldn't you.
All the while I'm picturing little horses and deer and lambs and goats!!
Is this the same thing?? What is a Mairzy Doats??
It's something my dad used to sing to me, and I thought i "knew" the words!!
OMG!! My 4th grade teacher sang that song to us all the time. I sang it the same way you wrote it!! I can't believe it isn't mares eat oats!
it is! (mares eat oats etc)
i sing the same song to DS as well

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you? If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey, Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy."
Exactly!

I just love when people of an earlier generation use the word "dungarees"!
my mom still says that!
This reminded me of another one - my grandmother used to call every fridge a "frigidaire". I never heard anyone else do that, so I'm not sure if it's a generational thing or if she was just quirky

I had to add this..
My nanny used to fill shot glasses with orange juice. hand one to each grandchild that was in the room (i'm the oldest of 28 , there were prob 12 of us at the time).
She would sing "Here's to Maureen, she's true blue. She's a rummy through and through. She's a rummy so they say, she meant to go to heaven but she went the other way, so drink chug a lug chug a lug chug a lug).
you repeat this with every grandchilds name. LOL

My mom always calls them dungarees and for flip flops, it's "thongs". LOL. So one day, my mom says to my sister in law, "we have the same thongs!" SIL goes, "how do you know what I'm wearing!?! LOL as she feels her ass to see if her undies are sticking out

This is not an expression, but it still cracks me up.
One time my grandmother said to me very sternly: "I know your brother takes the pot." as in marijuana
Okay, when you say it like that, it's hard to take you seriously

My mother and grandmother are French, so a lot of their funny sayings don't necessarily translate, but the ones I remember most:
Ecouter, sante! - If you know what's good for you, you listen! C'etait pas onions! - Mind your onions (business) Cheveux partout votre ass - You have a hair across your ass (what's your problem)

Things your grandparents say (or used to say)...add yours!
I used to have dinner with my grandpa every week when I was in college. We went to the same restaurant and sat in the same seat every week. The first few weeks, there was always a water by his seat (normal at a restaurant), but my grandpa HATED water, so he would say, "If I wanted water, I would have been a plant" and then ask them to take it away. Then he would say, "Can't drink water; water rusts your insides!" Eventually they stopped giving him water!
