Jeeez I'm no genious but I get what the OP is "trying" to ask. You guys sound like a bunch of bullies..that were probably picked on all your life. Sorry to the OP but I have no suggestions on LI.

Clearly. You spelled genius incorrectly.

Did anyone else giggle at the irony to this?

And since I'm so simple minded and apparently a bully who was picked on all my life - THANK YOU for knowing me and my childhood SO well! - might you enlighten the rest of us bullying dolts with what the OP was "trying" to ask since apparently I'm not understanding?

Oh and might you care to explain the quotes around the word trying, since she, in fact, DID ask the question.

Many thanks!

Well I'd would rather have common sense and be respectful to others that are looking for help then sit behind a computer judging them. If you aren't here to help someone then find something better to do with your time Chat Icon It's pretty pathetic. I come on here to kill time at work and maybe learn something new..and all I've learned from this site is that there are a bunch of prententious assholes on it...and I'm still sticking with my original assumption Chat Icon

Chat Icon

Yeah. Ok.

So you threw out the insults too..How are you any different than me? Chat Icon

Oh and you never did answer my question...Maybe you should get into politics!

Sorry your being attacked/mocked. I know exactly what your asking, although it may not be expressed with the right terms. I have family in the Boston area, who are all professors in some of the big Universities, and I totally get what you are saying. Unfortunately, you will not find that on LI, but I agree in what others have said in that you may have to find groups related to your interests and go from there. Good Luck!

Some people on here are being SO rude. Do people really not get at what she was asking? Give her a break!!! If you didn't have anything to offer her, don't respond. She said "in general". She did not say, every single person in a low-income area is stupid. She simply said that a higher-income area would be more likely to have intellectually-minded people. I took that to mean that they are more likely to have gone to college and have higher level degrees in order to earn a higher salary. Which is a good assumption considering she is giving Boston (college central) as an example of a place in which she enjoyed living. She obviously is looking for that sort of area. She is not looking for anyone's opinion on that! Yeesh! Everyone needs to lighten up.

But seriously, Maybe you're more of a city person then a suburb person?

I would agree with this. Maybe it is the city lifestyle you are looking for. I'm not really sure how you could describe any kind of neighborhood as intellectual. How would you identify that, exactly?

I grew up in a household where my parents constantly had this wide variety of characters coming by.. intellectuals, artists, politicos. It was so much fun listening to them. They'd talk, argue, engage and the subject matter was so varied.. education, foreign policy, television, art, pop culture, etc.. People would just kind of show up randomly.. they'd sometimes play poker or bring instruments and kind of jam with each other. I always thought *my* house would be like that. And it's usually not but I say all the time that I need to cultivate that kind of environment for my kids because I learned SO much and was exposed to so many different opinions and topics when I was young that it really stimulated my curiousity and desire to learn.

Is that kind of what you are looking for?

YES. That sounds like utopia to me. Chat Icon Your parents must be very cool.

It's possible that your key error is in trying to match intellect and ability to communicate in a compelling, passionate way to education level or financial status?

Yes again. That's what I was trying to get at, but probably didn't word as well as I could have--

I grew up in Central Islip. Terrible school district. Then I moved to a "rich" area where I hated the snobbery, even though the people were more intelligent overall. Intelligence and education don't always go hand-in-hand, but they often do. Same with financial status-- according to what we're taught, you're supposed to work hard in school so you can get the best jobs, which presumably pay good money. But there are plenty of exceptions-- smart people who choose low-paying careers, smart people who couldn't afford to finish college, etc. as well as rich people who, for various reasons, don't have brains to match their "status."

That's why I've wondered here if there's an in-between place... somewhere more middle-income that draws people who are interesting and intelligent. I used the word "intellectual" when pressed only because it's an easier measuring stick... it doesn't really describe what I mean, because I don't consider myself an intellectual, but I do value learning and education. But just like schools use standardized tests that are not wholly accurate, they do at least give some starting point to get to what you mean.

From the consensus here, I'm gathering that there probably are no specific towns like that on LI, and that what I experienced in Boston was just because it was college. (For the record, the people I hung around with there were very diverse and the opposite of "uppity." They were the nicest people I've ever known and I loved spending time with them talking about everything from local bands to women's rights in the Middle East.)

I think you'll find them just by putting yourself out there!

Thank you! That's the hard part... I'm a little shy, especially when I feel like I don't fit in. Threads like this make me have to fight that urge even more. I read things like "Don't move to Chicago" and "We're being punk'd" and it just makes me feel like not taking the risk of putting myself out there even more. I really need to stop caring about what critical strangers on the Internet think of me. One day I will. I hope. Maybe when I find my little town of nerds. Chat Icon

LOL! Right on... I need to find Eureka. :)

By the way, to those suggesting that I'm probably more of a city gal, you may be right. Long story short, though, I'm a single mom and I need to stay in Suffolk County so my dd can be near her dad, too. I'm mostly considering places like Smithtown, the Setaukets, and Kings Park, so I hope no one uninvites me from them. ;) What prompted the question was that I had it narrowed to East Setauket as my #1 choice, but then I read some reviews of the high school that suggested it was snobby. So I worried we might not fit in there, either... though it's hard to know if a few reviews represent reality.

Re: Where do the smart people live?

I think that the the 5 boroughs should be in your consideration. I know that Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens fit the bill. (the other two Borroughs) i cant comment on since i know them the least) I was born and raised in the city. I need to be surrounding by people of all walks of life.I love the diversity of everything and the constant hustle and bustle. Variety is the spice of life and you will definitely find that in the boroughs. I hope you find what you are looking for. I am not a long islander so I can't comment if a place like this exist in LI. Perhaps the towns with downtown areas is a good place to start

eta: I see that you have to be in Suffolk. One of the two places I know and like is Babylon Village. I like it because of the nice downtown and the very good access to the city via LIRR. It is walkable. It has lots of old houses which I am a sucker for. I also like the village of Seacliff. It has a low key, artsy vibe and old gorgeous homes. LIRR line is horrible.

Re: Where do the smart people live?

Are you looking to buy a house? There are two for sale across from me in Smithtown. Both homes are being sold because one owner passed away and the other is in a nursing home, so just a life cycle thing not a bad neighborhood issue. And dh and I consider ourselves pretty smart people to talk to and our neighbors have broad interests and talk about interesting topics as opposed to gossip Chat Icon fm me if you want!Chat Icon

I am good friends with 3 Stony Brook professors. 1 lives in SB and 2 live in Huntington and I have met a few of their colleagues and Huntington is one of the more popular towns to live in.

Probably a definite area is the houses on the CSH labs in Laurel Hollow, but a lot of the scientists also choose to live in Huntington.

Re: Where do the smart people live?

I think defining people as smart is the most subjective thing EVER.

I know PhD's who don't know their asss from their elbows. So, they were able to sit for years in school. Some are still ginormous morons. Trust me.

I know people who never graduated HS, and they are the smartest people I know.

Smart and rich are not synonymous. Neither are poor and stupid.

I think you mean somewhere with culture and a sense of community? I'd check out Northport Village or Huntington Village and places like that. They usually have a main street downtown area

Chat Icon Chat Icon I lived in Huntington and now live in Northport!!!!!!

I also am a former city gal.

Not to sound snarky, but I think common interests are what you're looking for over intelligence. I could be wrong. If I had a conversation with people from my field, or people who share my interests in certain books and films, I may fit their view of intelligence. If I sat with physicists or even your basic math teacher, they would shake their heads and wonder how I get myself through life.

Lived in Boston for 10+ years, I know what you mean. Yes, you infuriate the "masses" with your title/comments. Oh well...too bad, so sad.

Move to Bellmore...I live there. I am very smart, understand the ways of Beantown and don't give a rat's a** who you offended today. Carry on sweetie Chat Icon
