speech therapy and OT at 3 years old?

3.2 yo DS is in preschool. his teacher called me tonight, thinks he needs speech therapy for articulation. she also said i should get an OT eval, said somtimes he gets really absorbed in what hes doing and totally zones out, its like he doesnt hear her calling. i have no issues with this at home. hes very social and friendly. how woudl OT help with this? i mean, i dont even know whats going on
also, do you think he would get speech for articulation at 3? i'm in nassau county
the teacher told me to call the preschool director in the AM, to figure out what i do next, DS goes to school in nyc and i live in nassau (right on the border) and she wasnt sure who i call. does anyone know? the school has a few agencies they will work with. but do i call district?

ETA: how long would it take?

You would call your public school district. I don't know what OT would do about the issue of your DS not "hearing" the teacher.

You need to call the school district of where you live and let them know you need a speech and OT evaluation for your 3 year old. I think it's great to get whatever you can if your dc needs it and yes you can get services for just articulation. Teacher probably mentioned to get an OT eval just in case maybe OT will touch on attending skills I'm not sure but it wouldn't hurt to get an eval. If approved services can be done at home.

thanks to everyone. i called the school district, filled out the paperwork to register DS with the district, now waiting to hear from them.
socially hes fine. there are no social issues at all. i really dont knwo why teacher feels i should get an OT eval, she said she thinks OT may help him focus? i am going to talk to her before i meet wit hte district. speech i would really like him to get, i hope he gets approved.
what agencies woud you recommend for the eval? looking for an agency with good SLP

It's up to your home district really as to what specific evaluations are ordered. They will do the basic psychological, a classroom observation, a speech/language eval probably. In my experience, then if concerns are raised regarding fine motor or visual-perceptual skills, or if there are significant sensory issues (though not every district will do OT just for sensory, esp on an initial), they will do an OT eval. They may not even do an OT, unless they feel it's necessary. It is not the preschool teacher's job to order specific tests, her role is to report her observations and concerns. Hth and good luck.

speech therapy and OT at 3 years old?

The fact that he is tuning the teacher out might be an OT sensory issue. But as Chai77 said, not all districts will provide services for that. Being a speech language pathologist for preschoolers, I do have to say MOST of my little clients are for articulation at around 3 years old. The cutest kids in the world!

If you have any more specific questions after the evaluation, let me know :)
