Drain flies
Anyone ever have experience with drain flies? We have these little black flies in our house every now and then. They are not gnats or fruit flies. They are bigger. They can be in any room and we don't know how to get rid of them. DH googled what to do and we did all suggestions with no luck. Wanted to see if anyone had them before we call an exterminator. Thanks!

Drain flies
We had them and although they're called drain flies, they didn't come from our drain. They were actually breeding behind the caulk on our shower pan (where the pan meets the wall). The moisture gets in there (which is perfect for them) and they keep breeding. It took a while to get rid of them, and it was pretty disgusting, but it's possible to do on your own. We had to use a bleach mixture (or similar cleaning product) every day until they were gone. Just douse it and then keep it very dry.
You have to figure out where they're coming from so you can treat it.

Re: Drain flies
Thank you. Ours aren't coming from the drain either. Problem is we have no idea where they are coming from!

Re: Drain flies
We're having the same problem and I have NO idea what to do and no clue where the hell they are coming from!
eta: I found out that this often occurs when people are out of the homes for a while for whatever reason (like the hurricane or vacation, etc) and we were living with my parents to the power came back for over a week. When we got home is when it was the worst. I have bleached the shit out of every drain and sprayed clorox clean up spray on everything. and I haven't seen a fly in a few days.

Drain flies
If you have a shower, pour some bleach on the part where the floor meets the wall (where the caulk is) and see if any worms wiggle out (gross I know). They are tiny, but that is what becomes the flies. If you don't have a separate shower, try the bleach at the caulk line where the tub meets the wall. Good luck to you both!
