I had a discectomy in 2010, and for a while I felt great. Now I am having severe back pain again. Mostly when I'm sleeping or resting and try to move. The pain is not as bad as before surgery but I can't imagine having to live like this forever. I need to see another specialist. I went to LI Spine Specialists for the surgery so I'm looking for somewhere else. Please help.

Re: Spine specialist
I'd reccomend seeing a doctor at hospital for special surgery. I had 2 spine surgeries at LIJ, and while i liked my doc, obviously things didn't go as planned, since i just had a lumbar fusion 3.5 weeks ago. I've also had a cervical fusion which was about 10 months ago.
Anyway, i see Dr. Harvinder Sandhu from HSS. he comes into uniondale 2x per month, so you can do regular visits there, and only need to go into the city if you are having surgery. He's very nice, takes the time to explain things really well. You don't feel rushed with him. And he won't recommend surgery unless he really thinks it will help. (a friend of mine saw him for continued back issues, and he said don't even think about another surgery because it won't correct the problems he was having.)
Keep in mind if you do need surgery, HSS is the place to be. top orthopedic hospital, and their policues and procedures for dealing with orthopedic issues is so much better than out here. But, since that's all they do, they know how to handle stuff related to those issues.
Good luck. Hopefully you won't actually need more surgery, i've been through 4 of them in just over 2 years. I can't say its my idea of fun at the moment, but after chronic pain for 2.5 years, i think i might finally be heading in the right direction.

Re: Spine specialist
Do all the doctors at HSS accept the same insurance? I had called another doctor there and they didn't take mine. I am a teacher and there are very few places that don't take my insurance, I was very surprised that they didn't.

the spine group at beth israel is also very good. michael neuwirth has been my spine doctor for over 20 years, and has operated on me 3 times. (spinal fusion for scoliosis, discemtomy, and another spinal fusion). when I had my first surgery, he was at hospital for joint diseases. take a look at that hospital as well.

Re: Spine specialist
i think insurance depends on the doctor. i know some don't even take insurance at all. so i would check each doc there. some don't come out to the island, but a few do.

I totally agree!
The Uniondale office is wonderful, and so convenient. I can also recommend Dr. Geiger.

yes, each doctor there is different, though they may share an office. I saw a doctor there who took our insurance, and my husband saw one who didn't take any insurance!

Dr Faust at Orlin and Cohen orthopedics is phenomenal! He did my lumbar fusion in June. I have work in orthopedics almost ten years and in the OR with many spine surgeons and I adore Dr. Faust, he is very personable and professional. Best of luck!
