Freaking out - Roaches - Exterminator

We live in the city so unfortunately, a roach happens now and then.

In the last 4 years here, I think we've had a total of maybe 5 roaches - so it's very rare.

Last night, my cat caught one and then there was another huge one this morning!

We've never had 2 in back to back days. They were both in the bathroom and I think they came up through the sink pipe.

Would you get an exterminator? Is it safe with me being pregnant? I am avoiding the bathroom just because of the raid fumes.

There are products they can use that are safe during pregnancy and it's always good to be extra cautious and keep the windows open and not be in the place while they are applying it and for a few hours after, depending on the product. Just make sure you tell them you're pg, even though the concern is more during the first tri.

Also you need to close off any cracks, crevices and get a drain cover (those mesh things at bbb).

I work in an apartment complex in the city and from time to time residents get roaches. We've found the best thing is to just get about 5 boxes of those roach motel things and spread them around. That seems to be more effective than the exterminator. I would do that first - you don't want to be exposed to those chemicals!!

Those are waterbugs. We had a major problem with them in our last apt so I feel like I'm a pro. Do you live on a low floor in your building? They come up from the basement. Let your building know so they can treat the basement. However, unfortunately, there isn't much you can really do to completely eliminate waterbugs. If your building has them (and most of them do) then they can easily get into your apt. But you can make the situation better.

Definitely call an exterminator! Your building may have one who comes weekly that you can sign up for. There's often no charge for this as it's a service of your building. He will put a gel into your pipes which should help control the bugs. The exterminator can also put glue traps down (similar to glue mouse traps) though that will just catch them, not get rid of them. And also, have your building check for any holes in your wall - they are common around where the plumbing comes through the wall. So check under the kitchen and bathroom sinks, where the pipe for the toilet comes in and around the pipes in your radiators. Have the super patch any holes. And lastly, if you find they are coming through your sink, just close the drain to your sink and bathtub until you can get an exterminator to put the gel down your drain.

Good luck! They are gross and annoying, but not harmful.

definitely make sure all drains are closed or covered. we always leave drain stops in, and have gotten a mesh one for our shower.

also, if you go away for a few days, make sure you run water down your drains and flush toilets upon your return. our building's exterminator said that they can climb up pipes that haven't been used in a few days (ewwwwwwww).

Waterbugs are the most disgusting things ever. We also live in a big apartment building and the first time I ever saw one in the bathroom, I locked it in the bathroom and waited 8 hours for my husband to come home and kill it.

You def. have to always keep the drains covered and the stopper in the sink down.
