What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
I keep hearing about them and about how they are so uncomfortable or just downright painful...
I go to my OBGYN every two weeks, and two weeks ago they told me that at my next appointment, it would be my last with them checking my cervix with the internal sonogram machine thingy. Afterwards, the Dr. would check them "manually" i guess?
Can anyone explain?

that's what i thought - but i mean, why is that so uncomfy? i'm not saying that to sound stupid - just don't understand why that would be as awful as some women are making it out to be. I know everyone tolerates pain differernly...but like...how far are they sticking their hands up in there?

What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
Someone had posted a while back that the doctor puts their entire hand up there to feel the cervix and the baby's head if s/he is not breech. So basically as far up as it will go!

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
I've never felt any pain when getting an internal-so it doesn't happen all the time.
The only time I had pain was when I was in labor with DS and they had to reach in there to break my water, but my cervix was anterior. With DD when they broke my water, it was not painful.

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
I just had my 2nd one this morning. They basically stick 2 fingers up enough to reach your cervix and see if they can feel if you are effacing and dialating. The first one was not bad but as the baby descends and you have more pressure and the more painful the exam is.

If they are still using an internal sono, then you must be really early, right? "Internals" are normally done the last 3-4 weeks of the pregnancy to check for the position of the baby, dilation, effacement, etc. It can be really uncomfortable depending on your body and where the baby is. I never had an issues with the internals during my first pregnancy.

i'm 33w now and I go i n on Thursday, i'll be 34w4d then. They told me at my last appointment that at my 34 weeks appointment, it would be the last time they use the internal sono machine to check my cervix...either way, this is still breech so not sure if that will make a difference or not when they start doing internals

thats what im wondering about too. Last night at 32w5d she was still breech... they do a quick sono at every appt to check.. i wonder if she remains breech if they would even bother with internals.

i'm assuming they would continue to do them. My Dr. said that they don't actually make a final decision about what they will do if the LO is still breech until after the 37th week.

It's really NOT that bad. Really! It's slightly uncomfortable for a few seconds, but it is less than a minute long. I'm the biggest wuss there is and it wasn't bad at all. It's only slightly more uncomfortable than an internal sonogram.

Gotcha! I did not realize that they use the internal sono for breech babies! In both of my pregnancies they never used an internal sono past 12 weeks and then I only got a sono at 20 weeks and 35 weeks... I can't remember if I had any more with DS...

I would assume even with a breech baby that they would do an internal to check if you are dilating..because you can still dilate and go into labor with a breech baby... It might even help them to determine if they need to schedule a c-section earlier.
Overall the internals are not bad. They are uncomfortable but super quick.

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
I have a titled uterus so even getting a pap is sooo painful for me, needless to say the internals were a nightmare. Thank goodness the midwives didn't do them when I switched to SB Midwives for my second pregnancy. For my first, a resident at Good Sam did an internal to check and see how far along I was when I was being induced and just rammed her hand up there I started crying and she's like "um just relax its not that bad". What a jerk I wanted to punch her face lol

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
Not all doctors are as rough - I have multiple doctors in my practice and my first internal was OH MY GOD painful. I felt like her elbow was up there.
But I have been to 4 different doctors since them that all performed the same exam and had little or no pain at all.
So hopefully I am telling you this to not scare you. Either way, it is quick and it didn't hurt afterwards.

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
I remember my first internal my doctor told me I had to relax and I told him it was hard when it felt like he was reaching for my tonsils through my vagina.
I think maybe I just didn't know what to expect. Since then the other appointments have been fine.

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
It all depends on who is doing it. I had some issues at the end of my pregnancy and in a very short time I had three people do them. 1 of my regular ob's...slighlty uncomfortable. Some intern guy at the hospital...so painful I wish I kicked him or knew better to tell him he had no idea what he was doing. 3rd was with another ob at the practice I went to...absolutely no pain.
Internals don't have to be painful.

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
I guess it hurts because your cervix is more sensitive. It also depends. I remember it not hurting at all and then sometimes it was very uncomfy. My cervix was high thought and not dilated at all until the very end, so maybe that's why it was uncomfy?
They do it to see how dilated and effaced you are, but you DONT have to get them. It's not mandatory and really doesnt matter if you're 2 cm dilated or not because you could go into labor anytime without being dilated at all, and you could stay at 2cm for a month with no progress!

Re: What are these Internals everyone keeps talking about??
It definitely depends who is doing it. During labor, I had one dr do it and omg it was horrible!!!!!!!!! She was so rough and I wanted to cry from the pain. Ughhhh but other than that, it was just a tad uncomfy.
