dd, 19 mo not saying words
I've tried not to panic but now her ped wants her to be evaluated for speech problems. He told me to call a place called all about kids. I didn't want to at first because I felt she was too little, but I did and they told me to tell her to get the ball, get the doll, etc., see what she does, get back to them. Well she doesn't seem to get it. What now? I keep blaming myself that she isn't talking, I'm a f/t working mother, often prone to guilt lol. She goes to an in-home day care with older and younger kids so she hears them talk, dh and I talk to her, read to her, I don't know, tia for any input.

Re: dd, 19 mo not saying words
I highly recommend following through on services. It's amazing what they can do to help.
And don't blame yourself. There are so many kids that have services in place for extra help these days........I also notice that there are a lot of kids out there too who could probably benefit, if their parents pursued them. My SEIT is telling me this all the time, based on her interactions with my son's teacher at his nursery school.
My nieces had services since they were premature. My one niece still does (speech) and now DS has services too.
The providers also work with you, to give the service in the child's natural environment.
The ladies on this board are also an amazing wealth of information.

Re: dd, 19 mo not saying words
First thing I would do is stop blaming yourself Some kids need an extra push. Next thing is to call up EI (Early Intervention) in your county. For suffolk it is 631-853-3100 in nassau it is 516-227-8661.For other counties here is the list: Early Intervention Tell them that you want your DD evaluated for speech. You do not need a referral and there is no out of pocket cost. They will ask you to pick an agency to evaluate DD (They will give a list but you can Use All About Kids if you want to). it is a relatively quick process within 30 days I believe.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask

I would call for the evaluation. She would have to have a significant delay though for her to get approved. Early intervention is so tough these days. My son just got approved at 14 months but we are already in system for Physical therapy. You may need to hire an outside agency. See if your insurance covers.

Thank you for the kind words and insight! I will call them and get this going. I think I'll feel better knowing what is going on than doing nothing at all.

Re: dd, 19 mo not saying words
I had concerns about my DD for speech. She wasn't really saying anything. even the most basic things like mommy, daddy, up and down etc.
So when I expressed my concerns to my pediatrician..she told me to call Early Intervention suffolk County. she gave me all the info. DD was evaluated for speech and also by a child psychologist because of other concerns I had.
at 19 months in September...She was diagnosed with PDDNOS. I seriously thought speech was the problem. never did I believe she had Autism. I nearly cried every night for two months since she received the diagnoses. I blamed myself.
She was approved for 25 hours for ABA therapy. She started in October. DD now talks all the time and understands everything we say to her. Its only been 3 and a half months. On top of that I asked the county for speech and they gave me Speech 3x a week for 45 minutes. I am now also getting her evaluated for PT (which she did not qualify for) and she will be evaluated for OT this week.
my biggest advice to you is to get your DC evaluated now. Some kids need the extra push and I cannot stress enough how important it is to do it so early on. Their brains are like sponges and take everything in and are learning daily.
I am so glad that I did not wait. our families said she was too young and that eventually it will come. I seriously thought I was going to wait until she turned 2 to get evaluated. DD turns 2 this week and I am not sure where she would be if she didn't get the services but I am pretty sure she is farther along if I never made that call.

thanks Miss2mrs, that sounds similar to our situation. We were also going to wait until she is 2 but I don't think that is a great idea anymore. I have some other concerns too, like I used to bring her to a mommy and me class and she would not participate in the songs and stuff, not even for a few seconds at a time like other kids her age. I chalked it up to her being independent, and maybe that is all it is, but I have a nagging concern about it. All she wanted to do was play with all the toys and do her own thing. It's nice to know we're not alone and I'm not the only one who feels guilty about it.

CAll EI and get her evaluated. If it's nothing, no harm done. If it's not nothing, it's better to get services ASAP.
