Olive oil

Does brand matter when it comes to olive oil? I'm doing my online peapod shopping and I notice there a big difference in price: Goya is 3.99, Stop and Shop brand is 4.85, and bertolli is 10.99 (plus a bunch of other brannds in bnetween!)

Is olive oil something you cheap out or slurge on? Does brand matter?

Re: Olive oil

extra virgin olive oil? it depends on what you use it for. For cooking and such, i don't worry so much about brand. But if i use it in salad dressing, or as an accent to something and drizzle it on - then i try to get a better olive oil because i think you can notice the taste more. (like serving olive oil to dip bread in with spices)

Goya is really good. I use Trader Joe's EVOO simply because it's always a really good price. I don't use much in cooking since I prefer a canola blend, but I use it sometimes. I don't fry or anything in EVOO.

Help me out (I am by no means a chef)- what is the difference between cooking in canola oil and evoo?

Re: Olive oil

I think it depends on who you talk to.

The Italian's in my life would probably say absolutely.

I tend to buy on the cheaper end though, and I don't care about brand names.

For me, my taste preference is that EVOO is good in things that need a thicker oil or that sort of fruity taste that EVOO gives. Canola or other types of vegetable oil are much lighter in texture and color, and impart no taste.

If I fry chicken cutlets, its going in canola oil.

If I need to make salad dressing, I use EVOO.

I might just be weird about which oils I like to use and where, but that's my reasoning Chat Icon

I'm an olive oil snob and lover of all things olive oil.

I have tried so many brands at all price points and my favorite by far is the one at Trader Joe's. It's absolutely perfect. Not too thick, not too thin, just the right amount of flavor.

It's around 8 dollars.

Olive oil

If I need to cook with EVOO, I just use whatever I have. For dipping or special dishes, I use a more expensive one that I got from Fairway.
