Severe anxiety and possible PPD
Hello I had my baby exactly a week ago and for the past few days I have horrible anxiety and panic attacks with constant racing thoughts. I've also been crying non stop and feel so guilty and sad. I went to my OB today and they prescribed me Seraphim.
Has anyone taken this before? I'm afraid it will make me worse. I've taken Zoloft in the past but had to get off it bc of the adverse side effects.
Anyone take an anxiety med they like that they would recommend?
Also, does anyone know of any support groups or psychiatrists that specialize in this?
I'm feeling so horrible any help is appreciated. I went to a psychologist today that i found online but she was no help. TIA!
ETA I'm located in Garden City

Severe anxiety and possible PPD
Where you located? I know of a great doc in Smithtown.
I never took that medicine before but am sadly well-versed in panic disorder and anxiety. I suffered for many years and know the hell it is.
I like Lexapro and they should maybe give you some Ativan or Xanax to take as needed. Are you BFing?
I also know of a wonderful progam in Huntington that specializes in this.
You are not alone.
If I can be of any help or a shoulder, FM me. I know what it's like and have been there.
One thing I can say is that working out can help release anxiety and increase endorphins, which are feel good chemicals. This can help a little in the meantime.

Psychologist in West Islip specializes in this. Dr Helen Meyers Montauk hwy west islip. She would also be able to refer you to a good psychiatrist for meds and give other info for support groups.

Re: Severe anxiety and possible PPD
I had horrible "baby blues" upon discharge from the hospital, when my boys were 5 days old. The exhilaration wore off and I was just left with a sense of sadness and anxiety. Thought for sure it was ppd but then I read that "baby blues" peaks at around then (something to do with that's when the hormones level off- it was exaggerated in my case bc I had 3x the hormones) anyway, baby blues is a real thing and totally typical and distinct from ppd. Google it! I hope this is what you are experiencing. If so it alleviates very quickly. If not, you are to be commended for recognizing the signs and seeking help quickly! Best to you.

I was going to say this too. I can't speak to the anxiety attacks but the sadness, crying and guilt etc all sound like baby blues to me. I would sit on the couch and cry for no reason. I would read something and cry I woudl cry because I missed work. I would cry and cry. It resolved quickly though. I hope you feel better soon and get the help you need! Hang in there!

i stopped bfing and went back on lexapro.
i am soo sorry its an awful feeling especially when you want to be more present for the baby kwim?
what helped me was tiny doses of xanax while the lexapro kicked in.

Re: Severe anxiety and possible PPD
It is totally normal. I had terrible anxiety after having both DD's - probably for about 2 weeks. One day, I was literally running out of my house crying and wanting to leave my family and live by myself somewhere, and the next, I was totally fine and ready to be a mommy. Your hormones are running wild and you have just undergone a major life change, coupled with mourning the loss of no longer being pregnant and feeling that closeness of having the baby inside of you. It takes time to feel "normal" again. I would not jump inot taking meds just yet. It WILL get better. Give it two weeks - you will in all likelihood feel much better. If you don't, then try the meds. Just realize that you will be better soon! Hang in there- you aren't alone!

Re: Severe anxiety and possible PPD
I had this happen when I had my first baby 5 years ago.
Zoloft didn't agree with me. I took Xanax during really bad anxiety attacks. I only needed it for a few weeks. Then, talk therapy helped a lot. I went to a lady in CT where I lived.
There is help, and you can get better!

I had the same feelings after having my daughter. Started on Lexapro and took Xanax as needed. I wouldn't wait to see if it goes away on it's own because you just want to feel better right away and enjoy your baby. I felt better after a couple weeks on the medicine. It really helped me.

ITA. Not that you shouldn't address your problem if there is one, but it took 2 weeks for me to feel somewhat like myself again. Hormones are no joke. Hope this passes quickly. GL.

I totally agree with all of this. I was an absolute wreck for the first 4 wks of DDs life (my mom even asked me if I ever thought about harming myself or the baby, that's how worried people were about me - the answer to this ques was always no though, thankfully). I even said to my DH, I can't do this, I need help. I'm really stubborn though so I decided to see if I could make it to my 6wk check up. By 4wks, I was a different woman. It was like a switch was flipped and all of a sudden, I felt better. I found that working out played a huge part in how I felt and accepting any and all offers of help from friends and family and reaching out to them whenever I needed additional help. The beginning is so extremely hard, I really hope you begin to feel better soon!

Re: Severe anxiety and possible PPD
http://www.postpartumny.org/ is a great resource.
St. Catherine's in Smithtown has a PPD Support Group. I don't know if there is one going on right now but if you call up and ask for Jen the lactation consultant she runs it and will be able to give you all the information. I went to this group after my DS was born and it was a huge help.
Hopefully you will be feeling better soon. Hormones are ragging right not but it is great that you are aware that their might be more to it then baby blues.

I had the baby blues too, I hated that feeling it was worse at night because I was nervous about her waking up in the middle of the night. Your whole life has changed and its a drastic change so its normal. Its the dramatic drop of hormones. What helped for me was:
-Napping (even if it was for a few minutes) -Going out to run some small errands while my mom or DH watched her for a few hours. - Showering and doing my hair/make-up
It went away after a few weeks and I felt so much better!!

Thank you for your replies and help everyone! I spoke to my dr today about the choice in meds (since it was the nurse practitioner who prescribed me the sarafem) and he suggested Lexapro instead. So I took my first one today.
I really hope I start feeling better soon. I was so not prepared for this at all, I thought everything was going to be "happy go lucky" when the baby was born. And now instead I just sit here and try to get through the day.
I feel so bad for anyone else who has every gone through this!
