Water breaking in bed...

Has anyone heard that if your water breaks while you're in bed your mattress can be ruined? (Depending how wet it gets)

I never heard this before but was at a shower today and that's what these ladies told me so they said to buy a mattress cover or something to protect it. I never thought about it til now

I'm interested to know this because it's like... are you supposed to have a mattress pad everywhere you go? On your couch? On your seat in the car? etc.

Water breaking in bed...

Mine broke in bed with my first. I felt and heard a pop...but there was no real gush of water. I got up to go to the bathroom and was leaking lol! I just took a garbage bag and sat on that afterward (along with wearing pads, which I had to change every 10 minutes!). A friend of mine suggested purchasing some Depends just in case!!!

Oh, and didn't ruin the mattress at all.

Water breaking in bed...

I was thinking of sleeping on a towel when the end was near just to be on the safe side but don't think it would really work.

Crashing

Mine popped in bed and than I jumped right up and stood on the floor. My floor took the big gush of water but that was ok because its wood and easy to clean. A little water got on the bed but nothing major. DH soaked it up with a towel and cleaned it and I couldn't tell anything had ever happened there.

I would do this. When mine broke it gushed for hours. And I was soaking through pads and everything else. So I was walking around the house with a towel between my legs. Lol

So ironic this post came up today. I went to Target and bought a waterproof mattress protector to keep on the mattress. It goes right under the sheet. Our mattress is fairly new and I just felt better having it protected.

Mine also broke while in bed asleep. I felt the POP and it immediately woke me up and I jumped right out of bed, as I knew what it was. I ran to the bathroom and it was pouring into the toilet. I too had Depends on hand and used them until I got to the hospital. Mattress was fine.

This was exactly my experience with #1. There was no water on my sheets at all. Once I got to the toilet it was like Niagara Falls. In the car I used a plastic bag and stuffed a bunch of old towels in my pants lol.

Mine broke in bed and there was a lot of water. Never ruined my mattress. I wouldn't worry too much.

Mine broke in bed while I was sleeping. I woke up thinking I had peed on myself but my mattress was dry. I only leaked when I got up from bed.

Water breaking in bed...

Mind broke in bed a few.weeks ago!! The sheets were wet but I have a protector underneath so the mattress didn't get anything on it. The sheets and the cover (and my pajama pants for that matter) were washed and they're fine.

Water breaking in bed...

Mine broke while asleep, but it was a trickle at first. I laid there for a moment and thought it was pee. When I realized it wasn't, a little more came out and I got up. It never soaked the mattress (i keep a mattress cover on normally anyway) and I threw the sheets in the wash.

Generally, if your water breaks it's more likely it will happen when you get up out of bed then while you're laying in bed.......at least that's what I have read. That was the case for me anyway.

When I was pregnant with my DD I woke up around 2 am to let the dog out and when I was about to get back into bed my water broke...............like a giant POP and gush broke. And I gushed and gushed and gushed. It was nuts.

My friend had a similar experience, she woke up to pee in the middle of the night and then when she got back into bed she started trickling fluid.

To be safe, you can always put a waterproof mattress pad/cover under your sheets. Chat Icon

I keep a mattress pad on now thru the end. With my first my water did break in the bed I jumped up so fast and ran to the bathroom just in time.

Re: Water breaking in bed...

I slept on a towel for the last 3 weeks or pregnancy for this reason. Both times, my water had to be broken at the hospital.

Water breaking in bed...

I think mine must have broke in bed, because when I got up and went into the bathroom the water started gushing out. But it never hit the bed. I would say this is not something you need to worry to much about!

Mine broke all over my bed. Not gonna lie, there's a water stain, but the mattress itself is fine.

Put a shower curtain over your mattress on your side of the bed.

I remember the person who ran our birthing class said to get a waterproof mattress cover... But I didn't and luckily, didn't need to with my first. I may consider it this time around because you never know when and how your water will break!

Didn't happen to me, but I bought a $20 waterproof mattress pad from Bed Bath.
With the $5 off coupon, it was really cheap.

I figure it will be good to have for if DD sleeps with us one night (when she is older) - you never know with kids....

Re: Water breaking in bed...

maybe put a towel down just in case. when my water broke i was laying in bed watching tv, and felt a weird pain then got up to use the bathroom and everything gushed out. it was on our wood floors though so it wasn't hard to clean. however i had to keep a towel in between my legs because it wouldn't stop.
