Thyroid Question

So through fertility testing I found out my Thyroid level is a 3.7. They want it under 2 so I will be starting Synthroid today. I have always felt like I had a sluggish thyroid. Have all the symptoms but every time my regular doctor would test me he said my level was fine.

My question is, what was your level and did the medication help with the symptoms? Should I really be feeling symptoms if my level was a 3.7 and my pcp always told me that my level was fine? What was your level once you went on medication?

Re: Thyroid Question

I don't remember my exact level when I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid ( i have a long history with thyroid issues)

But I do know that my specialist said I was "borderline Hypo" and that I didn't need synthroid. I went to my PCP who has hypothyroidism and she agreed with me saying I have all the symptoms of Hypo and my number is higher then the normal (even slightly) and she herself likes to be at a 2 - she feels better at that range so she gave me 50mg of synthroid a day and I am now around a 2 . Practically symptom free.

Every Dr. Treats you different and every lab has different ranges of normal. You have to find what range works for you.

Yes. I was diagnosed when I had similar levels as you. Most dr.s are not up to date with the new standards regarding thyroid values. Which is sad because these ranges were changed 5 years ago. Normal range used to be between .5-5. Now I believe it is .5-3. When you are pregnant they want you to remain very close to 2, in fact both pregnancies I had to get tested every 6 weeks and my meds were increased every six weeks to me in the range. I also feel best when at around 2.5.

Re: Thyroid Question

My level was once nearly 18 or something crazy like that!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Even then, I really didn't feel much different. My hair was breaking more and that seemed weird to me and I felt a very anxious - although at the same time I was having some bad problems with my surrogate cycle not working out so the anxiety was most definitely attributed to that!

Anyway my point is, with a thyroid level of 3.7 you would probably not have symptoms.

My thyroid is currently normal and I've been on levothyroxine (synthroid) since May.

I most definitely have symptoms when at a 3.7. Tired, ichy skin, hair breakage, sluggish, constipation, weight gain, sluggish reflexes and my hands swell. Once I am closer to 2, all those symptoms fade away. I am also very sensitive and can not even be on generic synthroid because they can deviate in dosage depending on distributor. So yes, you can definitely have symptoms at a 3.7. I was diagnosed with my first pregnancy in 2008 and have been battling with hypothyroidism since then. About.com has a weekly newsletter that they email you. It is a great resource and is filled with great information and often discusses levels and information about pregnancy and post pregnancy and thyroid issues.

Penny Cat are you sure your level of 18 was TSH and not Total Free T4. The Total Free T4 has a normal range of 4-12 where the TSH usually is usually the numbers with the decimals and are a lot lower.

Re: Thyroid Question

i was tested during this pregnancy and was found to have a level of 5.6 I was extremely exhausted but thought it was due to being pregnant. Turns out I have hashimotos so ill have a thyroid issue for life.

Once I started the meds I felt a lot better right away.

at my first recheck of levels I was .935 I will get my blood rechecked this week.

Yup! it was TSH. I was diagnosed originally at my RE and it was very low... then went VERY high. I had thyroiditis. That was absolutely my TSH level.. scary... I know...
