Empty sac
We had our first sono only for the technician to find an empty sac We were so disappointed. The doctor wants me to have a D&C on Fri. Does anyone know how long we have to wait after until we can try again? Or how likely it is that there is a bigger problem? I am hoping that nothing is wrong with us and that this just happens.

Empty sac
I'm so sorry. :( We had this happened in our first pregnancy and the dr said it unfortunately happens but it's very unlikely to happen again. We were able to start trying our next cycle once the hcg level went down to 0 and I got my first period after the D&C.

how far along are you supposed to be? if you are prior to 6w i would get a second sono before doing the d&c. that being said empty sac/blighted ovum is usually a chromosomal abnormality that isnt compatible with life. its usually a fluke, but you might want to consider getting a genetic screen to see if you are a carrier for anything, esp if you are jewish. if you are a carrier for something then your husband would need to get tested and in the off chance you were both carriers for the same issue then there would be steps to take to ensure a healthy pregnancy. those chance are pretty low but it might be worth doing particularly if you are in a higher risk group. also if you need a d&c they might be able to test the tissue to see what the abnormality was - which would give you better insight into why it happened. im sorry

I am so sorry
I know how devastating it feels to get news like that. It is not an easy thing to go through, but it will get better...
After my MC we were told that we could start trying as soon as I had normal cycles again. It took me about 5-6 weeks before AF came again... They say you are extremely fertile after a D&C so hopefully you can start trying right away. But see what your doctor says. Every situation is different. ((hugs))

I am so sorry If I were you I would have a second sonogram prior to your D&C just to make sure it is a empty sac and not that your dates may just be off.

Yes totally agree!! I would have another sono in a week just to be sure.

Empty sac
This happened to me before I had my daughter. However, to this day, 3 years later, I still think they rushed the D&C and should have given it one more week. At any rate, we waited 3 months to try. (Not because we had to, but because I had to time it right with maternity leave.) I know how you must be feeling; and I'm so sorry.

Re: Empty sac
No matter how sure you are of your dates, I would request another sono in a week. Good luck!!

Re: Empty sac
I'm so sorry!! But I agree w/ the others, ask for another sono in a week, if you are not bleeding or cramping, I don't see any reason to schedule a D&C right away.

Re: Empty sac
I second what every else said about waiting for a week for another sono before committing to the D&C. I have longer cycles and thought I was sure of my O date. I was really upset when I had a sono because of spotting and I had an empty sac measuring 4w5d when I should have been 6w. I went back a week and one day later when I should have been measuring 5w6d based on the last sono, and there was baby measuring 6w2d. How far along do you think you are versus what they measured the sac to be?

Re: Empty sac
Please call the doc and demand that you go back in 2-3 weeks for a 2nd sono. I wouldn't do a D&C before that. I should've been 7 weeks and went for a sono... had a sac w/ just a yolk sac in it. The doc said either I ovulated late and wasn't as far along as I thought OR it was just empty. He had me come back 2 weeks later. I cried for those 2 weeks, sat in sweats, and felt horrible...sick and wasn't sure if I was going to have a baby or a D&C. Well, I went back 2 weeks later and guess what.... there was a heart beat and a little embryo in there, looking just as good as anything. I must've ovulated late.
I think that too many docs send you in fora D&C without giving the possible embryo time to develop.
I should add that I always go to a special, high-risk sono doc (as I'm high risk), and they have high def 3D images, and still couldn't find an embryo the first time. Soooo glad I don't go to a doc who just rushes to D&C. Please double check before you potentially get rid of a healthy embryo.
If no embryo in a couple weeks and you must D&C, I'm sure you'll be fine the next time. Hang in there... I know it's a horrible feeling.

Re: Empty sac
Thanks for your advice girls. It's great to hear that people have positive endings to their stories, it makes me hopeful for the future. I am supposed to be 8 weeks, and there was nothing to be seen on the sono. I am also 34, so I am concerned with my age and don't want to waste any time if the doctors seem sure. It is sort of concerning because I have a family history of miscarriages. I have been through basic genetic testing to see if I am a carrier for CF and a few other things, which I am not. Hopefully this was a fluke and we can get lucky with a BFP that sticks next time.

Re: Empty sac
My doctor said we could start trying right after I saw him after my post op visit from my D & C. However, it took my body 2 cycles to come back to normal.
