Lactose Intolerance- Milk alternatives?
I think I've become lactose intolerant... at least mildly so. Every day at work, I have a plain bagel toasted with butter and a glass of chocolate milk. I know, I'm a big child. But I hate regular milk and at least I'm getting calcium that way. I started to get stomach pains after breakfast and cut out milk for awhile, drinking cranberry juice instead. Of course, no more pain. So I guess the obvious answer is don't drink anymore milk. But that makes me sad! I can still eat ice cream, butter, yogurt, etc, it's just milk that gets me. But I desperately miss my chocolate milk in the mornings! I know there's a lot of options out there- Lactaid and Almond Milk and Silk and others that I don't even know about, but the thought of fake milk turns me off somehow. Are there any good ones? Can I still use my Hershey's syrup and make it fake chocolate milk? Forgive me if these are really dumb questions lol!

Re: Lactose Intolerance- Milk alternatives?
I've drank both Lactaid and almond milk. I found lactaid much more tolerable. I mean, almond milk is pretty good. I would have it in my cereal and even in my coffee. But I couldn't drink a straight glass of it. I think mixing either with chocolate though would be fine
They also sell lactaid pills you know. You take one when you eat dairy. You can try that too.

Hmmm I didn't know there were lactase pills I could take... maybe I'll do that. I don't like change.
Wait- the almond milk already comes in chocolate flavor? Interesting...

Lactose Intolerance- Milk alternatives?
My DH uses the regular Lactaid milk for his cereal and I've used it if I run out of my milk. Can't really taste a difference. I think it's pretty good.

I know that the So Delicious brand makes chocolate coconut milk. Also try Silk chocolate almond milk and chocolate soy milk.

I'm lactose intollerent and I drink almond milk. For everyday (milk in cereal, coffee, etc.) I drink unsweetened vanilla almond milk.

Re: Lactose Intolerance- Milk alternatives?
For those of you that drink almond milk, do your family members drink it too?
I ask because the main reason I don't buy almond milk or lactaid is because I would have almond milk for myself, whole milk for my kids and 2% milk for my husband. Ain't nobody got time for all that milk

I'm th eonly one who drinks it. I buy 2% for my FH and son. You can buy smaller sized almond milks if it's just going to be you drinking it. They come in 32 oz containers.

Re: Lactose Intolerance- Milk alternatives?
I've been lactose intolerant for years and I find that I can make almost anything at home that I normally can't have in a restaurant because there is dairy in it. For butter I use country crock. I know it's not dairy free but for some reason I'm able to eat it. Fleischman's makes a soy based dairy free margarine but only unsalted so it's not very good. It's great for baking but to butter bread it's pretty bland. I agree with the pp that said almond milk makes a chocolate milk that is good and lactaid chocolate milk is also really good. I'm pretty sure you can use your syrup to make your own chocolate milk. There might be some dairy in the syrup but I don't think it's very much. Try taking a lactaid pill with it. My favorite dairy free milk is smart balance lactose free. IMO it tastes just as good as regular milk.

Yupp, that's the other issue. My DH wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole! I'll have to get smaller containers. I mean I drink it daily, but not THAT much of it.
Wait... does it last longer than regular milk?
ETA: THANK YOU ALL! It's nice to know they actually taste... milky.
