Anyone's child have an MRI & EEG?
Bumping with another question -
Did anyone's child have a sedated MRI at a radiology place? Was it ok there or would you have rathered it at the hospital?
All the hospitals are scheduling a month out & our doctor wants it sooner. I preferred doing it at a hospital, but may not have a choice.. I'm just nervous because of the sedation.
---------------------------------------------------------- Original post:
I have to take my 1½ year old for an EEG & a head MRI with sedation.
Anyone have experience with this? How long were you at the hospital for the MRI?
Did you go to LIJ or Winthrop? Happy with where you went?
If you can share your experience or FM me, I'd appreciate it. I'm a little freaked out!

Re: Anyone's child have an MRI & EEG?
My daughter had an MRI of the head and cervical spine at one years old. I so nervous at the time. Went to Winthrop they were excellent. It went very smoothly. I think it was worse for me then her. I was at the hospital for a few hours. The worst part is inserting the IV. I probably posted your same post a little over a year ago. Don't worry it will be fine. Any question fm me.

My son had an MRI and EEG but wasn't sedated. It was a 24 hour one in the hospital, and the most challenging part was him sitting still to get the electrodes glued to his head. I would bring a DVD player for that part, because I assume they are awake for that.

Re: Anyone's child have an MRI & EEG?
My DS had an MRI with sedation at 6 months old. We didn't have it done in NY so I can't comment on the hospitals but here's how it went for us. We were at the hospital for about 3 hours. They had us come in an hour before the scheduled time so that they can put a numbing cream on the back of both hands and the bottom of his feet. This was so the IV did not hurt when inserted. After an hour we were called back to the sedation area and they looked for a good vein. Unfortunately, because he is so little, my DS veins were not big enough so they had to give him gas first to put him to sleep. The effect of the gas makes their veins dilate and easier to find for an IV. We stayed with DS until he was asleep by gas. They put the IV in without us there. We were apart for about 40 minutes while he took the MRI (some hospitals have the option to watch the MRI through a window, but mine doesn't). Once he was done and back in recovery they called us back. It took about 15 mins for him to wake up. To DS, we were there with him the whole time. We left about 30 mins after he woke. He needed to be able to nurse/eat before we could leave.
I completely agree with the previous poster that it is way more traumatic for the parents than for the child.

Re: Anyone's child have an MRI & EEG?
My son had a non-sedated CT scan at 4mo and a sedated CT scan right before 2.5yo.
I was a nervous wreck.
The sedated one was so quick! I had it done at a radiology place. We were in and out in probably 30 minutes. The scan itself only took a minute or two----most of the time was spent trying to wake him up. Within an hour, we were outside playing.
Hugs! I know how tough this stuff is......in this case, it really is harder on the parent.
