Shammy Scratching

Last week I brought Shamrock to get groomed. I think they used a different shampoo this time because he keeps scratching. He has scratched so bad on the side of his face it started to bleed. I have been cleaning it with peroxide, putting bacatracin(sp) on it, giving him benadryl and have put the cone on him so he cant get to it. Is there anything else I could be doing? I feel so bad- he is miserable with the cone around his head :(

Celia, I'd give him an oatmeal bath.. wash what ever they used that he is reacting to off. Other than that - sounds like you're doing everything you can to make Shammy comfortable!

If baths don't work you could try a low dose of benedryl he might be allergic to something blooming outside, something he ate, a treat the offered him or possibly he got bit by a bug (flea, spider etc.)

I would ask the vet what the dose is for his size, don't try to figure it by the bottle since it's for humans.

I knew a westie who would scratch for days after being given a treat that he shouldn't have had.

Re: Shammy Scratching

I have started giving him Benadryl- I've given it to him before so I know he can have it. I guess i just have to pretty much wait until it heals before I take the cone off.
