I help out when I can. Reading this, I feel like its a competition on who is involved more though.

There is no competition. The most important factor that alot of people mentioned is that you are involved with your child's education...anything else you do or don't do is a personal preference. As a SAHM I try to do as much as I can for the schools as I previously mentioned only because I know a majority of the parents have to work and I want to make sure that the services that the PTAs offer the children, all children not just my own are maintained. If the moms and dads that have the time don't do it, then who would. As they say, it takes a village.

I don't think it is a competition at all. I want to be as involved as possible because I need connections at the school, especially when DS is in school. I want to get to know kids and families of kids that my kid is hanging out with.

I understand that a lot of parents cannot be involved. I work too, I'm just lucky that my schedule is somewhat flexible. I do what I can while I can because who knows if I will always be so lucky.

Ah yes...Good Ole' Lifamilies will do that for you! :)

Being a FTWM...I will try to be as involved as I can, but reality is I am exhausted daily, and will be lucky to get through dinner and homework. ;)

See.. I don't agree on this.

The question was asked, answers were given. I don't see a single shred of judgment anywhere on the thread.. except maybe a few people who are judging themselves.

Do some folks seem PROUD of the fact that they are able to do a lot and invest a ton of time and energy? Sure. And they should be. There isn't any shame in that.

Some people are 'super moms' who seem to be able to juggle class mom duties, PTA chair duties, full time jobs, volunteer work, cooking homemade dinners from scratch based on ingredients from the garden they take grow organically in their own yards, throwing cocktail parties for the school board, hosting foreign exchange students and preparing their dissertation for their 3rd doctorate while pregnant with triplets and raising 4 school aged kids. Hyperbole, yes.. but I seriously think some of the women I know are not too far off from this. I could feel threatened or jealous or take their ability to manage as a direct threat or swipe at my own mothering skills.. or I could accept that we are just different people with different bandwidths and abilities.

I'm mostly happy with what I do. I do think I might be able to do more.. so sometimes i have a little momma guilt.. but I don't think it serves to project that onto anyone who is able to do more.

I didn't post on here but, I am very involved. I'm very involved in the school because I am very involved in my DS's life - period. Not a competition for me at all Chat Icon

You can be very involved in your child's life, and not be very involved in school functions. Especially parents that work.

Being involved in their education is completely different than what the OP asked. She asked how involved are you AT school. I think it's a given that most parents are involved in their child's education.

I read these types of threads as competitions. Especially when people have to defend why they aren't that involved at the school. Perhaps I read more into it, but that is my feeling on it

I said that I was involved in the school because I was involved in his life - I DID NOT say that if you are not involved in school it means you are not involved in your child's life Chat Icon

And, yes, it is what I meant - I am very involved in the school to the extent it means I am involved with him. I am the class mom and I attend every class party and I volunteer for every school event where HE will be - any time there is an event during school hours that he will be attending - I volunteer to be there. That is what I meant. And, again, THAT is why I do it - not to compete with anyone - so that he (and I) can have these wonderful memories that we have made these past few years. And, when my DD starts school I plan to do the same exact thing!

Re: How involved are you at you LO(s) school?

I am a work at home mom so am somewhat fliexible...I go in to DD's class from time to time to read, I do a craft with her class about every two months or so, help out with parties or any special activities etc etc..helped the teacher out with various admin stuff during the year - she lost her class assistant this year due to budget cuts so the admin help was something I could do at night and she was extremely grateful.

I know my DD's teachers and they know me and that is important to me.

I honestly feel so lucky to have a flexible job that allows me to do this.

I'm not involved at all and I like it this way, I'm not the mom who ever wants to be involved in anything school related, PTA or otherwise (unless absolutely necessary) that's just me. If they ask me to volunteer for something or chip in with $ I'm more than happy to do so if I can, otherwise I don't get involved in anything school related . I just wish I could to go on field trips with my DD , but I also have an infant and no one to watch him so I can't this year, maybe next year.

How involved are you at you LO(s) school?

The competition comment is wild.
Parents should be so thankful that the parents who are able to be a the school take advantage and do so.
