Re: Cord blood banking question
We did it. The only con we saw was price. It's expensive but we felt like god forbid something happened we wouldn't want to regret not doing it and having it as an option.

Cord blood banking question
I might be in the minority but we're going to donate our cord blood instead of bank it. I spoke to my sister about it and she said that the list of diseases that the cord blood companies give you is really just diseases that it might help somewhere down the line when research is back up and running on stem cells. She mentioned that most doctors think it's a "pyramid scam" but since they make money off of it in NY the doctors scare you and push you into having it done.
After hearing it from her I looked into it more and even asked the ped about it. He agreed with her (which I thought was interesting). He said while it's not proven to help now, it can in 20 years. I mentioned that in 20 years I could take a pill and not even need the cord blood, to which he said "exactly". He also mentioned one other thing that I didn't think about. G-d forbid my baby has some kinda disease that they would use cord blood for, the cord blood would also have that disease in which case they can't use it.
I agree that if we were to do it we would do it to be safe rather then sorry but the price is not just that $3,000 flat, you have to pay after that too. And for something so uncertain, it just didn't work for us.

Cord blood banking question
My DH and I went back and forth on this with DS. I really wanted to do it and he didn't. I think I wanted to do it out of fear in case he ever needed it. After researching it I found since we didn't have family history of any illness that we most likely wouldn't use it. It was also very expensive. We decided we would donate it.
Well after all that they didn't get enough and we couldn't donate anyway. Which apparently happens often.

This...and I have a friend who used hers immediately because her DS was born with bleeding on the brain and it was life threatening as well as concerning for brain function. He came out of everything just fine. Recently on the news studies are showing possible benefits of using cord blood for autism. I wanted to do it for this too but DH doesn't want the expense. It's a hefty fee up front and a maintenance fee of 100.00 a year.

This. We did it for DS 1 & 2, but decided against doing it for this baby.

Cord blood banking question
Given our family histories, there was nothing that justified for us, to bank the cord blood. I have no issue with anyone else doing it. If we had different family histories, our decision would probably be different. We will donate if possible.

Cord blood banking question
We did with our first, but I honestly don't think we can afford it this time around. I totally forgot about it and we don't have time to save...I feel kinda awful about it!

Cord blood banking question
i was talking to my Dr. about this. She said that it ususally cost $3000 and you have to pay about $150 every month (like a storage fee). i guess if you have the money then it is a good insurance plan. unfortuanley too rich for my blood.

Cord blood banking question
I always felt the same way with my last pregnancies - too expensive - not enough proven data but I guess I am the 1 percent stat bc my DD was born a 28 weeker who ended up being diagnosed with cp and if we had her cord blood now she would have been accepted into a rogr at duke which would likely have her walking now.... We are going to bank our next babies cord blood for sure in the hope that sibling cb transplants may help her but I know this is a rare situation and to me the 150 a year is less then cable - either way it's a personal choice just wanted give u another perspective feel free to MSG me if u have any ? As I Donets he on this subject
