How long do you breastfeed on each side?

DD is 3.5 weeks. I nurse on demand for as long as she wants. Sometimes it's over 30 minutes on each side! And its killing my breasts. When will she get quicker? Sometimes I can tell she's just using me as a pacifier but sometimes she's actively sucking the whole time.

I'm curious about this too, but I asked the ped and he said 10-15min on each side, so that's what I've been doing. DD is 3 weeks and is gaining appropriate weight, so I guess it's fine. I usually feed every 3 hours, but my nips are pretty sore too!

DS1 would nurse for 45-60 minutes as a newborn. He was always a slow eater and even as an older infant, he'd nurse for at least 30 minutes. DS2 has nursed for 10 minutes per side since the beginning. Each baby is different. Make sure DC is actually swallowing and not just comfort nursing. DC should be at least a little more efficient by 3 months.

My DS would nurse in the beginning around 45 minutes each side. The ped of course told me that was too long, but I went with my LC who said let him nurse as long as he wanted. In the end, I did what I felt was right for him and let him nurse for as long as he needed, and I would say by around 3 months, he was much quicker. Now I'm lucky if he nurses for 10 minutes total on both sides. Hang in there, it gets better! But I remember in the beginning how I dreaded every latch because my nips were so sore.

at that age tiny tot would nurse for about 20mins (growth spurt was longer) and pass out so I wouldn't even get to do the other breast so I would just pump. which worked out good because it helped me build a nice frezzer stash Chat Icon

My ped told me 5 minutes on each side. But, I ended up doing as long as he wanted. I think sometimes it is just for soothing and comfort. But if it's starting to bother you, make the session shorter. You don't want to be in pain Chat Icon
Even now at 13 months old, my son is still nursing. But it's only about 10 minutes at night.

I always let DD go as long as she wants. At that age it was tough bc she would stay latched forever and it was hard to tell if she was eating at all or just hanging on for comfort. She rarely ever pulled off as a newborn so I would gently pull away and see if she tried to latch back on or was okay with stopping. If you're in pain, I would limit it somewhat, maybe 20 minutes a side or give her a few minutes passed when she seems to be actively eating. They do get great quality milk at the end of a session plus it's good for establishing your supply to let her stay on as long as she likes but you don't want to be in pain.

i let DS nurse as long as he wanted. Sometimes that was a 30-40 minute feeding on one side. I would offer the 2nd side but he usually only nursed for a few minutes if at all.
