Yeah, GMOs are so horrible. /end sarcasm. If used correctly, they could help the hunger issue in 3rd world countries.

Actually, this is a very controversial idea and certainly not a proven fact. There are many who don't feel that GMOS help with world hunger. Here are some articles on the issue:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-robbins/gmo-food_b_914968.html IMAGE http://earthopensource.org/index.php/7-feeding-the-world/7-1-myth-gm-crops-are-needed-to-feed-the-world-s-growing-population http://www.dw.de/genetically-modified-food-to-fight-hunger/a-15525069

Thanks for the links, but I don't consider them credible sources. I did find a few journal articles, and I find them more credible than the huffington post ;).

I'm not really interested in going through this debate with you (it never really goes anywhere and your sources are not really good), but I am amazed at how people (in general) believe media so much with no credible backing of science.

. Yes , we will have to agree to disagree. IMO, consuming gmo laden foods is akin to playing Russian roulette with ones' health. It isn't a choice I will ever make for myself and my family. If other are comfortable with the possible risk, so be it. I just hope this choice doesn't negatively affect them years later.

I agree with you. I'm not going to freak out about GMO's until I see solid scientific research that proves it's dangerous. At this point, it's people being afraid of the unknown...there was a point when a lot of people felt that IVF was "unnatural". We all know how that turned out....

Well I don't know that you can analogize unicorns to GMOs. Scientists could very well look into the impact GMOs may have on, for instance, cancer rates, infertility, gut flora, epigenetics, neurological disorders, etc.

The bottom line is that long term health effects of gmo consumption are unknown at this time. For me (and apparently many countries) that's reason enough to avoid GMOs as much as possible.

I totally agree. There are a lot who are concerned about what we don't know & long term effects. Many things, including cigarettes, artificial sweeteners, pesticides, asbestos, medications, etc....no one 100% knew the long term effects. My body, my kids growing bodies health concerns me. Our house eats a TON (literally) of tomatoes, zucchini & squash....so I'm glad I've began looking into this!

Exactly. In addition, people were really worried about cell phones when they first came out. AFAIK, there hasn't been any solid evidence that says people can get cancer from them. Cell phone use is pretty popular.

GMOs started in the mid 90s. Cell phones got popular at around the same time.

Newlymrs, at one point i was also concerned about the quash and zucchini that I was buying possibly being gmo. I called my grocer's corporate office and was told that it is their policy to source non-gmo produce. Maybe you could do the same?

I dunno, I recently saw a video of a young woman who would carry her cell phone in her bra, and she ultimately developed cancer, right in the same location she kept the phone. Coincidence? I don't think so.

So bummed re: Sabra!!!

Not all citric acids are GMO, it depends on what the citric acid is derived from. The problem is, unless you can do the research on the source, you won't be sure in the store.

You should buy organic zucchini if you are concerned about the GMOs.

Yes.

As always in life, "it depends"... http://blogcritics.org/can-gmo-food-be-organic/
Of course, whether GMO food is safe will not be determined until after people have eaten it for 20 or more years. By that time, non-GMO seeds may no longer be available on the planet, as the wind and the birds cross-pollinate our fields

Organic can't intentionally have GMO ingredients, but as this article points out, wind and cross-pollination can easily contaminate organic crops.

Yes! I read that Sabra uses gmo ingredients. I need to try the TJ's one.

Does anyone make their own hummus?

Try this recipe. link
