LIRR quiet car
For those of you that sit in these cars - do the conductors ever enforce the 'rule'?
I sit in them every day (because of where i park, and where my subway is) and i have yet to see a conductor say anything to anyone who is talking loudly or making noise.
What's the point of having these cars if they don't enforce it? All the regular commuters know its a quiet car, but its usually the non commuters who get on the train that don't know, and are the ones who are noisy.
Today, a woman and her toddler son were riding in the first car. The kid wasn't being too bad, but he was definitely above the 'quiet' noise level. I watched the conductor as he checked their tickets and he didn't let her know that it was the quiet car, or that maybe she would want to move to a different car (the train was not crowded and there were plenty of seats all around)

Re: LIRR quiet car
I am not surprised they don't enforce it but they really should. My guess is they don't want to deal with confrontations. Everyone is entitled these days. I'd be embarassed if I realized I was in a quiet car with my un-quiet toddler. However.... I would never walk between cars with her while the train was moving. I'd move when it stopped.

LIRR quiet car
I think the whole quiet car thing is a joke. First of all, you are in the front of the train so you have the train whistle blowing the entire trip. It is also always a bathroom car so that door is opening and closing, which is not quiet. I've never seen the rules enforced as far as people talking to others or on cell phones. My quiet car experience was so frustrating I never tried it again. If they really wanted it to be quiet, it should be the LAST car both ways, not just heading home, and the car shouldn't have a bathroom in it! Stupid LIRR

that's interesting, i never though of any of those things as being 'loud' enough to be bothersome. Its really geared towards keeping people quiet, not the train. i don't even notice the train whistle/horn anymore.
I do wonder why they don't make it consistent though, like always have it be the front or rear car.

Re: LIRR quiet car
Are there signs that say it's the quiet car so people know before they sit with their kids in that section? We don't ride the LIRR often, but I had no idea there is a quiet car, and have probably sat in it with my kids if there is no sign!

Re: LIRR quiet car
I would've assumed it was a 'don't talk on your cell phone and don't be obmoxious' car
This is why I drive. I can put on my private concert performances whenever my lungs are up for it lol

no, no signs. It's only on peak/rush hour trains in one car, and it's usually mentioned in the announcement the conductor makes before the train leaves (which no one listens to anyway )

I never even know what car I am in. Front, back, first, last, middle. I am just clueless on the train!

The times I have been on the train, you can't even understand what they are saying on those announcements.

LIRR quiet car
DH had no idea he was in a quiet car last week until an older woman yelled at him as she was getting off. It was my fault, I had called him to ask a quick question.

They should invest in some signs.
they won't put up signs because the quiet cars are not always in effect - only during peak times. And the cars on the trains are always being switched around, so there's no guarantee that car 1234 that is the last one of the train today will be the last car on the next train tomorrow - it might be the 6th or 8th car and then the sign wouldn't apply.
i think they should also recognize that many people have their headphones on and don't even hear the announcements in the first place, so if they really want to enforce it, then they need to have the conductors say it as they check people's tickets or something.

Re: LIRR quiet car
Or get signs in all cars and when the sign is lit up its a quite car. For the amount u all pay I don't think it's asking much

LIRR quiet car
The conductors never enforce any rules. Including checking tickets after Jamaica and Hicksville (eb). They mta have to our in many rules to counteract the laziness. Their onboard and refund fees Are to counteract the conductors not clipping tickets for people going to the city for the day.
On the acela the quiet car just means keep to library voices. And conductors do enforce it. But it is the quiet car not the silent car.

Re: LIRR quiet car
I used to ride on the "quiet car" in the mornings but these stupid chicks yap loudly nonstop and I had to switch cars just to get away from them.
I also love when the conductors carry on loud conversations in the quiet car. Just hte other day they were bragging about how they don't have to pay for their health insurance. I wanted to punch them in the face.
It's a monopoly. There's no competition. Most people have to choice but to take the train to work (driving really isn't an option if you work 9-5).

LIRR quiet car
When I took Metro North I always rode in the quiet car when it was an option. And I found that most people complied, but passengers were the ones who would say something to someone who may not have known. Though there were also signs posted on the doors.

LIRR quiet car
I only sit in the quiet car on the way home. And I never find it to only be the non commuters. The same group of regular commuters stand in the doorway when they get on at Jamaica and they are so loud. They always joke about it being the quiet car too.
