It is simply, if I gave you the option and you chose it, i won't back off of it. You always have a choice. I did not. I have used it less than 3 times.. she understands it, we haven't needed it in a long while. No need for time outs either lately. But I won't rule it out for the future and I see no harm in it at all.

I don't have kids I don't know. I'm leaning more towards no though.

My parents use to say spear the rod, spoil the child. Philosophy they lived by, well at least my mother to me. To this day we don't get along because of it.

I paid the price of my father beating her, I mean beating her like a man would beat another man. She use to beat the crap outta me for stupid things like not peeling the potatoes fast enough. I've had the belt, wood, paddle. The verbal abuse was the worst though, I remember the first time she called me w(ore. Thing was it never something I did, it more what she going through that day. One time she had to take my brother to the hospital because she hit so hard she busted his head open.

I think that's why my brother never spanked my nephew.

I never was. My parents tell me horror stories of their parents disciplining them and they both swore they never would.

Now we were threatened repeatedly with a wooden spoon...

But I did get my beatings from my brother.

Yes by my father only. He also said very hurtful things to my brother and I when he would get angry with us. My mom was very different. She never said anything cruel and absolutely never hit us.

I have never spanked and never will. I don't not believe in it.When I look at my children I could never intentionally cause them any pain. I could never say a mean word to my children either. Its just not necessary to me. There are better types of discipline IMO.

Yes I was hit growing up, and no I have not and will not hit my kids. I just can't see creating that fear in them. And I can't see how you can teach a kid not to hit others if the parents do it themselves. That's just my opinion.

I have been hit/slapped/spanked growing up. I have smacked my DDs hand a few times in extreme situations, and I do threaten to "smack" her (hand or tush) if the situation warrants. But I would not spank as a routine thing.

I was occasionally spanked.

I do not plan on spanking my son. My feeling on hitting is that unless you are going to hit your children so hard that you cause real physical pain they are not going to fear it so it won't be effective and I certainly would never hit my son to the extent of him being in pain. So I guess what I am saying is I don't find 'spanking' effective .

Time outs work well with him now at 21m. We also plan on using behavior charts, rewards system etc.

As he gets older he will have things he values taken away as a punishment , whether that be his attending a soccer game or taking away a toy.

I don't judge people who spank I just don't think it works and won't do it with my children.

I was spanked literally once or twice as a child, and it was for running put in the street. I have two children now, and plan on more. I have never once spanked them and I never will.

Yes, and I have spanked my son, once, when we were in a busy parking lot, and I told him to stay right by the door and he ran out into the lot instead. I would do it again if a situation like that.

I said I'd never spank my kid but the phrase "never say never" rang true. So I spanked & then realized it didn't help the situation. Now that they're older creative punishment comes into play & grounding from electronics come into play.

I was spanked as a child, which turned into being beaten as an adolescent. It was not a regular occurrence, but it happened more times than I can count on both hands and resulted in bloody noses, bruising, and "the belt".

I will not spank my son.

I won't say my personal experiences weren't effective, but they sure didn't make for a great relationship with my parents when I was younger. I think there are better ways to discipline than spanking that are just as effective.

I was spanked alot, sometimes it was unneccessary and I felt like it was my mom taking out anger on me. Sometimes, it was effective.
I spank my son sometimes but prefer other methods of discipline, just because I don't feel like spanking works with him personally.

I was spanked. When I was little, I got a swat on my butt a few times, a smack on the leg, etc. My grandma used to chase us around with a wooden spoon, lol.

I did get memorably smacked a few times and it was a learning experience. I called my mom a bi&^h once, and she smacked me right across the face..never did that again.

And another time, I was 18 and my mom was driving me to school, and we were arguing, and I tried to be cool and told her to f herself as I got out of the car, and she jumped across the seat and started wailing on me, hands and smacks flying everywhere. (My mom is 120 lbs, soft spoken, so she couldn't have actually hurt me) And at my school, all the kids waited in the front until the doors were opened, so EVERYONE saw. I totally was an 18 year old that got spanked, and I deserved it.

So, I don't see systematically relying on spanking as discipline, but I could see myself reacting physically if my kid was anywhere as mouthy as I was....I hear karma is a b, so I will probably have a kid just like me.
