Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills
Just wondering if anyone has information about the elementary schools in Dix Hills. One elementary school in particular is Paumanok. How does it rank? Do people like it? We are looking to buy a home that I believe is zoned for that school. I also read there may be a huge budget cut and they are possibly closing schools and programs. Does anyone know which schools?
Also, how is the area right near Strathmore Park (the other side of the Strathmore section) near Calumet/Fielding/Ibsen. I've been informed that the south of the LIE is less desirable but this section appears very nice. My husband and I don't know much about Dix Hills but we do know we want great schools and a safe community.
Any input or feedback would be so helpful as this is very stressful. Thanks!

HHH is a great school district. It is true that there may be some elementary school closings due to low enrollment and funds. There will not be any closings for this upcoming school year. Decisions will be made in the next few months about what will happen for the following school year.

Half Hollow Hills is a great district (we live here) but statistics show that surrounding districts (commack, northport, harborfields) are ranked higher- which is based on test scores. This surprised me as HHH has always outranked these districts- and was a top ten school district in the state in the early 2000. We are now in the 60's so things have certaily changed. HHH does offer more athletics/arts programs and AP courses. Since it is such a large district there are more opportunities..
My friend has three kids in Paumanok and loves it- she is very involved in the PTA. Schools must be closed as our enrollment is drastically declining but nobody knows for sure which ones. The buzz is that it will be Chestnut Hill or Vanderbilt for the Elementary. There is talk of a middle school as well- possibly combining high schools and making one high school the middle school. Paumanok kids go to Candlewood and HS West.
Much luck in your decision.

Paumonack kids go to west hollow and East. We are in the district. I know many people who go to Paumononk and love it. We know that schools will be closing but we will not know anything until October or Nvember as to which schools will close. That does not mean that education will be cut too, we just have low enrollment and it makes sense to do it. I moved from Syosset to DH and glad we made the move.

Any idea what has caused the decline? Do you think it will continue to spiral downward?

I believe the elementary schools that are closing are Signal Hill and Forest Park. HHH is an excellent school district.

I think the decline in enrollment is seen in many Long Island school districts. The lack of big corporate companies/high private sector salary coupled with high cost of housing and the sky high property taxes have driven away many young people. It's unfortunate but that has been the trend in the last few years and will probably continue until li can attract more companies and lower taxes.
