Southside Hospital Maternity Ward

I'll be delivering my son via c-section in about three weeks at Southside hospital. I was wondering what the labor and delivery unit and maternity ward is like, for those who have delivered here, also. I had hoped to have my son in the room with me 24/7. I read on the website that this is an option, but if I do choose this, would I need a private room? If so, and either way, how much extra are private rooms? If you pay to have a private room, would you be able to have someone spend the night with you? I have an absolute fear of being alone in hospitals overnight and have never been admitted in any hospital in my life, so I'm having a lot of anxiety over this. Lastly, I'll be breastfeeding; is this a problem with only semi-private rooms? Thanks in advance to any responses I receive! Chat Icon

You don't need a private room to have the baby 24/7, and definitely not to breast feed. There are privacy curtains. The only time I saw the other woman was when I went to check on her bc she was crying and alone.

A private room was $250/night. Dont know about overnight visitors.

If you don't have a private room,...you aren't allowed over night guests so I got thevprivatecroom. Have whomever it is bring their clothes pillows and blanket. I just gave birth there and loved it. I had a csection! Fm if you need more answers

Did you deliver before or after the new 24/7 visitors policy?

I am not getting a private room, it concerns me that with this new policy my roommate could have her SO and family there all night.

Thanks everyone! I'm really debating on the private room. I would just feel so much more comfortable having someone there with me. It is a lot, but it may be worth it. I'm so happy to hear that you loved it, 2BirdsofaFeather, since I'll be having a c-section also. What is the 24/7 visitors policy? I haven't heard of this.

I delivered at southide and I absolutely loved all of the nurses. I requested a private room only because we have a very large family and did not want to inconvenience a roommate. I had to pay for the private room oop. I want to say it was $250.
Eta. Dh stayed with me overnight. And you do have the option to keep the baby with you 24/7

Re: Southside Hospital Maternity Ward

I just had DS there three weeks ago today and we opted for the private room where DH could stay with me. The first night they didn't have a private room available so the gave us a double room with no roommate and didn't charge us. Only problem was they wouldn't allow DH to sleep in the other bed so he slept in a chair uptight. On day two we were switched to a private room where he had a recliner. The baby can room in with you 24/7 if you wish. We were also told about the 24/7 visitor policy and that would be even more of a reason to opt for a private room. Since you're having a csection, I guess it would get a bit steep for a private room for all those days. The room cost 210.00 a night.

Being that I'll be having a c-section and staying like three or four nights, I don't think I'll be able to afford the private room. I'm still talking it over, but it just seems like it'll be too much. You aren't able to split the days? Like do only the first in a private room and the rest in a double? Since I'll be in the most pain and stuff for the first night, it would be a help to have someone stay to help me with the breastfeeding and all that. If I can't, then it's an 'oh well', but I would love to if possible. What is this 24/7 policy though? I still don't understand it. If no one is allowed to stay overnight, how is it possible to have 24/7 visiting hours?

24/7 rule is there is no set visiting hours. People can now visit you 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This rule is for most of the hospitals in the North Shore LIJ Health System. As far as your private room question...you can start in a double and upgrade to a private room. You can't go backwards though. If cost is a factor for you then just stay in the double. You won't be alone since you have the nurses and your baby. I never delivered at Southside but work for Winthrop Hospital. As far as breastfeeding the nurses will help you with that. Don't freak out everything will be fine.

Re: Southside Hospital Maternity Ward

Does that mean you can basically have someone there at all hours of the night? I know, I panic over everything. Thank you, though Chat Icon I've been freaking out lately. Being that this is my first and I've never stayed in a hospital before or had any sort of surgical procedures in my life, I'm making myself worry. I always had a fear of hospitals. I have heard the nurses there are wonderful, though. I always get nervous that I won't be taken seriously, because of previous experience in the ER, since I'm 20 years old and they think of me as a child, it seems. I hope everything goes well. I'll probably start off with the double room, then upgrade if I need to, like you mentioned. Thank you!
