Help me settle this debate about salary

I had an informal phone interview with a recruiter for a company and at the end of the conversation, she asked me about my salary requirements. When I gave her the numbers she said "This is definitely within our range", which immediately made me think that I should have asked for more.

My husband, on the other hand, thinks that when the recruiter says "this is within our range" it means that this is exactly the salary they were offering.

What do you guys think?

Re: Help me settle this debate about salary

i agree with your husband - when we have open positions we have a salary range that goes along with it. When people's requirements fall outside our range, it usually doesn't work out. There's not much we can do we have limited flexibility. So i think its a good thing you are within their range, GL!

Its hard to say. If the "range" was 60k - 80k and you asked for 65k, then yeah you could have asked for more. But you will never know that. In some companies, if thats the range and someone wants 90k, they wouldnt even counter, you would be done. So don't beat yourself up!

Re: Help me settle this debate about salary

It depends but it's a good sign when they tell you the range is within their parameters. I have had recruiters ask me for my salary requirements and when I tell them my salary , they usually say, "we'll that's actually a little on the high end of what we could pay..but we may be flexible.", Only to go through aggravation because the job offer comes in too low. (actually happened last year when the HR woman from a law firm in downtown Manhattan made it sound like my offer would be $20-25K more than my current salary only to have the partner himself email me that the cap was set at X (which was $5K more than what I was already earning) and it wouldn't change. It's not worth it for me to commute into the city for only a $5K bump in payChat Icon .

Now if a recruiter asks for salary info, I always tack on an extra $5K to my base..if they need proof that I earn that, I tell them to give me the job offer first. Chat Icon

Re: Help me settle this debate about salary

You don't have to take that salary.

If you get the job offer and end up getting that salary tell them 'after talking to the hiring manager, i find the responsibilities for this job is greater than what I had anticipated so i would like to counter that initial offer....'

something along that line, and bump it up to what you think they may be ok with...

I've heard the initial offer is usually not the best offer anyway and there's always room for negotiation.

Good luck!

This is me at my new job. The salary is created by the hospital system itself and it is what it is.

Fortunately, the amazing benefits, hours and wonderful working environment make up for the pay cut I took from my last job. Also I am still bringing home more when it's all said and done due to the amount they contribute to health insurance.

You definitely need to weigh the pros and cons of a job change. Don't beat yourself up thinking of what you could've said or done differently.

Why not ask what the range being offered is. That way if you did get offered the position you would know what to counter.

Thank you! I also looked up a few things on line and am definitely planning on using this tactic, if I ever get an offer, that is.

I should have asked her that, of course, instead of just giving her my own range! Those questions always stumble me! I am worried if I don't answer the question but instead counter with my own, they will think me difficult! Chat Icon I know the rule is to never name your number first, but I am yet to figure out how to do it in negotiations. Chat Icon
