Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
wow, 10 years! I was freaking the hell out at home by myself because I was watching my newborn niece while my sister and BIL went to his grandfathers wake. I had no idea what was going on, and I had a screaming newborn and no way of getting into contact with anyone. I ended up going to my next door neighbors house for a few hours so I knew what I was supposed to do with the baby and then sat in my car with the ac blasting so the baby was comfortable and I could listen to the radio. It felt like it took an eternity for my sister to get home. I will never ever forget it and we laugh about it till this day because I refer to it as "the day I knew I was nowhere near ready for children"

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was at work and I remember being so bummed because I had made goal weight in weight watchers and they couldn't weigh me.
I was so disappointed i couldn't get weighed!! I was going to become a lifetime member.
My birthday is the 15th of august and I had saved all my points for Gemellis so I knew I had to wait another long week to get weighed in.

I was at work and in a basement office. All the lights went out and it was pitch black. The guy in the office next door came and found me and we held hands and walked outside. Then I said, I am outta here! Went home, had a corded phone so was able to use it, but no one else did so I had no one to call!. Then we had a drinking party

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was at a friends house (I was 16) when the power went out. We got in her sisters car and drove around and noticed all of the stop lights were out, and none of the businesses had power as well. We gathered up all of our friends and went to another friends house whose family was out of town. They were building an addition to the second floor of his house, so teenagers being teenagers, we all hung out on the addition under the stars with some beer lol.

Working customer service at Pathmark in W. Hempstead. I then proceeded to work about 10 hours manually entering every.single.perishable item in the store. There was only ahbout 10 of us working in the entire store at that point.
We then had cookout in the parking lot lol.
It was actually pretty fun lol.

I was actually on a plane when the actual blackout happened! I was headed to Chicago for a wedding with my then boyfriend. We landed and I had a ton of voicemails for a very worried mother. A lot of wedding guests from NYC couldn't fly out so ended up having to drive to the wedding. I got pretty lucky that I actually missed the whole thing!

At work in downtown Brooklyn! Thank God a co-worker drove me home, but what a horror it was getting home between the traffic and all!

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
NYC - in the grace building - walked to Queens- and a co-workers husband met us and drove us to NHP - had to get home to my son who was in daycare - since my husband was a police officer at the time and in the middle of times square, directing traffic. It was right about then we decided one of us needed to work in LI...

I had to run to one of the administrative offices in my college and then had a job interview for an internship with a theatre company.
Came out of school (Baruch, in the Gramercy Park area) and it was like....eerie. I thought for awhile we were under attack again. Walked a couple blocks, found someone in a car blaring 1010WINS and realized it was a blackout.
Okay, well....I wanted that intership. Bad.
So I walked (in heels...I hate dress shoes!) from Gramercy Park to the theatre district and the person I was to meet with was still in his office! I was a little sweaty but I shook his hand and said "if I can show up in a blackout, you can be guaranteed that I will be an excellent employee with no problems whatsoever". Got the job on the spot, which was an internship that set me up directly for what my goal in life was - a career in theatre.
Then I had to walk home (IN HEELS, SONOFABlTCH) to Queens...luckily, I ran into my cousin, who had a friend with her that had a bottle of vodka in his bag...we saw some kids along the way setting up a lemonade stand (early entreprenuers?) and paid them for half a gallon full of it. Filled the rest with the vodka, shaken not stirred, and walked and walked....given that 9/11 was only two years prior, we looked at the bright side....at least we weren't under attack again.
Essentially, the blackout might've really been a blessing in giving me a major set of balls to sell myself to that theatrical organization. I WANTED THAT JOB, and I got it!
love this story! (the lemonade stand... perfect)
Aww, thanks! It sure was an experience :)

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was working at Hallmark and everything went out. We thought it was just the strip mall until someone from one of our other stores called and said, "Hey, our lights are out."
The most memorable part of it was hanging out on the deck at my parents' and just how clear the sky was. It was amazing to see so many stars. The only other time I've had that experience is up in the Catskills.

I remember I was leaving for college the next week. My friends and I were having a picnic and drinking Mike's Hard Lemonade. Didn't realize anything was wrong. Went out to some stores and wondering why the cells phones didn't work and traffic lights were out. Went home, drank more Mike's. Stayed home from work the next day.

I was at home waiting for my boyfriend ( now my dh) to come over and go swimming. I was getting so pissed that he was late. It took me a little while to realize the power was out.

the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
Lucikily it was my day off, DH closed up his store and we went night fishing. It was crazy. We went by JFK which only had their emergency lights. It was like boating into the abyss, we could only see where our flashlight beams went - and had to signal to other boats where we were and even had to dock using the flashlights - we were definitely not equipped for night fishing. It was HOT and we were eaten alive by mosquitos but a few drinks in I didnt care.
And this is so crazy to think it was ten years ago, I would never do that now LOL I am so lame.

On vacation in Block Island with friends. They make their own power so we were not affected. Only found out while sitting in a bar and watching it on TV!

I was home, a teenager, and so annoyed I couldn't watch tv or go on the internet. LOL. I was worried about the *important* things.
Yep... I was 20 and life seemed to stop... I remember going outside and I've never in my life have seen so many people outside walking around, conversating etc. it was like a block party and no one knew what to do with themselves!

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was on summer break from college and working for my dad in forest hills. We had a battery powered radio and heard that the whole east coast was affected so we all left. I had to drive down Queens blvd and go all the way home to Merrick with no lights. And it was terrifying! Every intersection of Queens Blvd was a clusterf*ck. I think it took about 3-4 hrs to get home. The Chinese restaurant near our house had a generator so we ordered some food and ate in the backyard. I couldn't sleep at all that night bc the house around the block had a super loud generator and with everything else being so quiet it was really disturbing. I remember being so angry! I was 20 lol.

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was working in lower Manhattan. I had just started a new job a few weeks before. After we realized that no one had power and my boss realized there would be no work getting done , he took us all to the bar downstairs and we hung out and drank all night . It was also the first time DH and I (we met at work) started talking...I'm sure the alcohol definitely helped break the ice . Then we put carpools together for everyone to get home later that night. It was a most interesting night to say the least.
eta: I do remember people being very worried at first, especially since my office is just a few blocks away from Ground Zero and many of my coworkers were there for 9/11.

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was at work in Garden City. Our computers went down and we got sent home. I had to commute to NB and was really nervous about driving with no traffic lights.
When I pulled up to my house (Was still living with my parents) my whole family was sitting outside on lawn chairs bc it was so hot in the house!

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!
I was at work. They had power because they had a generator due to their 24 hour capabilities. I drove home from Garden City and it was weird with no traffic lights working. It was hot. My mom and sister were home. I decided to go to my then boyfriend's house (now fh) because his family had a pool. He had to come pick me up though. My mom was worried since my dad was working in the city and could not get in touch with him. Finally, my mom heard from him. He used a coworkers Verizon cellphone to call my mom. He stayed at a coworkers apartment with other coworkers. My parents switched to Verizon cellphones when he got home.
