Anyone get cold sores on lip while pregnant?
What did you do for it. I usually just use Abreva (I get them a few times/year), but the OB said not to take that and they were calling in Valtrex oral tablets for me. I hate taking anything but this cold sore blister is growing by the minute and very uncomfortable in the middle of my bottom lip!
I've never taken Valtrex...any side effects? Thanks.

I had to take valtrex bc of cold sores. I took it only for 2 days with no side effects. I took it in my third trimester bc it was that bad. In the first trimester I had them as we'll, but opted to take it. However I think they would have been perfectly fine to take.

I used Abreva (sparingly) when I was pg with a cold sore. My OB didn't say not to use it. I'd rather use topical than oral meds when pg, too.

Ive never taken it in preg, but took it for a cold sore in the past, and it worked SO FAST. Within a day you will notice it getting smaller and it should be gone in 2 or 3 days max

This and I had them the ENTIRE first trimester. Luckily none since then and I'm 34w! Dr said it was normal for all of the changes that were going on in my body! I also used tea tree oil. Usually the abreva and valtrex only help before it comes out or just starting to. So the tea tree oil helped when I couldn't control them coming out and needed to dry them out ASAP. Hope this helps.

I always take Valtrex when I get a cold sore...works like a charm. IF you take it right when you feel it get tingly, before it actually shows up, most of the time it will just disappear. I hate cold sores and I have gotten them since I was a kid.

Personally, I would not take Valtrex while PG, especially if the OB said not to use Abreva. Doesn't make sense to me that they would say not to use something topical but would say ok to taking something internal.
When I got a cold sore, this PG as well as the others, I just used Blistex.
