Quitting smoking
Please do not flame me because I need serious advice/help. I have been a smoker since I was 15 and I am now 29. Well I just recently found out I'm 4 weeks pregnant and I know I have to quit, I have cut down a lot but it's just really hard for me. Please don't judge me, I wish I would be able to just throw the dirty sticks away and be done with it but it is easier said than done :( so how did you quit for good? I am afraid to go cold turkey because of the stress but I'm already 4 weeks along and I am so scared I am hurting my baby again please don't flame me I really need help

Quitting smoking
I know how you feel and ive been there....ith my past pregnancy i was a smoker when I found out I was expecting- the first couple of weeks I did not have any morning sickness - but once it kicked in the smell of smoke made so sick I couldn t even be around someone else who was smoking - so that will likely happen for you too but My Dr at the time knew I had been a smoker and told that it was actually better to taper off over a couple of weeks then quit cold turkey - now I am not saying it is good to smoke while you are pregnant (so please dont attack) But it is a really hard thing to overcome - another thing to try would be one of those e-cigs - at least then you are not breathing in the tart, etc.....and it could help you while you lose the cravings for it. Good Luck to you.

Thank you so much for the advice! I have heard that about morning sickness and as twisted as it sounds I can't wait for it and I wish it would come now so I quit! I'm going to ask Dh to pick me up an E-cigg after work. I also heard the same thing about tapering off but I'm afraid I'm not doing it fast enough. It is really hard and I'm so glad you understand..... It's nice to hear from other people who have gone through it. I now I'll be able to do it but like I said I'm worried I'm not doing it fast enough

Re: Quitting smoking
Ugh! I feel for you. I quit smoking the day I got my BFP and it was one of the hardest things I ever did, because I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed it. I chewed gum and sucked on candies like they were going out of style. And then, like PP said, one day morning sickness kicked in and I didn't want ANYTHING, let alone cigarettes.
You're not alone. If you ever want to talk, FM me. Good luck!!!

I bought lollipops and gum and left my ciggarettes in the car today. I have to try harder because its not me anymore and God forbid anything happens I will never forgive myself! I wish I could just quit like you did Thank you for writing back... all of this is very encouraging. Someone told me to get a self help cd to play in the car so I can get out of the habit of smoking in the car which is when I usually smoke the most and I am so desperate I may give it a go!

Quitting smoking
I started cutting back smoking on 1/1/13. My BFP came in early Feb. Quitting cold turkey was a breeze once I got my BFP because there was absolutely no way I could, with a clear conscience, smoke a cigarette knowing I was pregnant. It was like a light switch, I never wanted another smoke once I saw that BFP. To me, it was making the choice that my baby was more important than a cigarette, and of that there was no doubt. I asked myself, how could I live with myself knowing I was choosing to harm my baby? That my selfish need to smoke was more important than my baby? Those are the honest questions you need to ask yourself. At 37w I still have not had a single slip or craving, and I refuse to go back once my LO is here.

I did the same.... Also swore I wouldn't go back after dd was born, but I have cheated here and there.

Re: Quitting smoking
I also quit cold turkey the minute I saw the bfp. It was REALLY hard esp. since my DH was still smoking. But I had been cutting down prior. If you haven't been cutting down prior, I tend to agree with the tapering, which I also heard from a doctor. If you go from a pack a day to nothing, the shock to your system could do more harm than tapering. I think what you should consider doing is going from whatever you currently do, to say 1 or 2 per day, for a few days, and then nada. Make a calendar and stick to it. Good luck - i know how hard it is.

I totally agree with this. I was a smoker since I was 15 years old and I stopped cold turkey the day I got my BFP. I had been tapering off the prior few weeks but the night before I tested I smoked an entire pack of cigarettes because of family issues that were going on.
You just have to keep reminding yourself that its not about you anymore. It was hard especially since my DH and sister were still smoking. My DH quit about three weeks after my BFP.
I will admit that I have slipped up and become a social smoker since about 9 months after my DD was born. Its dumb, I know. But I call it my summer activity and only do it when DD is not around me.
Good luck and FM if you need any support.

Re: Quitting smoking
I quit cold turkey the day I got my BFP also, but I had been cutting back because I kind of was expecting to get pregnant.
It was definitely hard at first, but it's something I knew I had to do. If you have to cut back at first before going cold turkey that's ok, it's better than not stopping at all.
Don't worry, you'll make it

Re: Quitting smoking
I am not a smoker nor have i ever been but i honestly think this is something you should be speaking to your ob or dr. about. My old boss was a bigtime smoker and her dr. advised her specifically NOT to quit cold turkey bc it could actually be harmful to the baby to do so. I guess it depends how much you smoke. if you smoke more than a pack or a few a day...quitting cold turkey could be a shock to the system and even cause seizures. definitely speak to a dr. they have seen this case over and over and can advise you best. best of luck.

I should have cut back when we started trying but for some reason I thought it would be easy to just quit =[ I do ask myself those questions and I am def. very upset at possibly harming my child but I am kind of worried about the stress level. I have done pretty well today by eating hard candies and lollipops all day long and DH is picking me up an ecigg for now and I will quit in the next week because it isn't just my body anymore and it is selfish. Thank you for sharing you experience.

I wish I could quit cold turkey like all of you!! DH only smokes if he is having a drink so it won't be that bad plus I already advised him that he has to quit at some point before LO comes lol.

Don't use the possibility of stress as a cop-out, that's a sure fire way to get out of committing to quit. Stress is there whether you're a smoker or not, you just need to have a different outlet. You can do it, this is the best possible reason to make you quit!

Quitting smoking
I used the e-cig and tapered off. DH still smokes, and I sneak a puff every now and then. I really wish he would quit. I don't want to go back to being a smoker after I have the baby, but I really enjoyed smoking before.

Re: Quitting smoking
honestly, I just went cold turkey. It SUCKED but it wasn't about me anymore, so as much as it sucked I just reminded myself that my baby didn't have a choice and just got through it one hour at a time. The good news, I never went back!
Do it for your baby and reap the benefits afterwards of being a non-smoker. It does get easier, I promise.

Re: Quitting smoking
Honestly, for me it was sort of easy. I found out I was pregnant, smoked one more ( I know, I know) and threw out the pack. I wanted them, but it just wasn't an option. DS is 2 1/2 months and I still think about it but I haven't had one. That being said, I had quit a few years ago and had only taken it back up a couple of months before I got pregnant.

I think it'll be easier than you think. You obviously want to do anything you can for your child so keep that in the front of your mind and focus on that.
